1/ I'm fortunate to mentor two awesome PhD students who received @NIH F31 awards. These pay about 26K in salary. In NYC, PhD students earn around 46K, leaving a 20K gap. It turns out that I cannot use R01/R21 funding to pay for this gap and have to rely on discretionary funds.
With new funding in place, we are currently recruiting up to 3 new MSc and PhD students for Sept. 2023. Projects will focus on metabolic contributions to muscle weakness in muscular dystrophies and cancer cachexia. Committed students driven by curiosity should apply. Pls share!
The Campbell lab is looking for a technician to join our group. Come and join our team :-)

Reviewed a few grant proposals from Sweden these past few weeks. The science was 😎 but I was more impressed that every CV had a section about professional breaks for paternal/maternal leave between 5 to 7 months. I was struck by how rarely I see this in USA CVs/ biosketches. – at Shoreline, WA
I am deeply shocked and sorry to learn that Jeff Robbins is no longer with us. He was truly a dedicated mentor, scientist, colleague, and, for me, above and beyond. We will truly miss him, but his science will remain with us forever! Rest in Peace, Jeff!!
This is indeed a sad story. Kudos 2 the whistleblowers. Sadly, too many of his cronies still at large. Amazing when one hears of the stories at NIH study sections back then. @Reuters

Exceptionally proud of Madison who successfully defended her thesis today, well done! Great collaboration with @SLangeLab and more to come from Madison at the #ISHR2022 conference in Berlin.
What new layer of hell is this, that with these Reviewer 1 scores my #NIH grant was Not Discussed?!?! These were some of the nicest reviews I’ve read. I’ll be in the corner mumbling about my stapler. – at Winston-Salem, NC

A single fume hood can consume as much energy as 3.5 houses per day, potentially releasing more than 15 tonnes of CO2 per year. They consume significantly more energy when they are open, so imagine how much energy could be wasted if we don’t remember to shut the sash 🌍🌬
I've seen multiple tenure track position job posts stating "candidates for assistant professors are expected to have K99/R00".
I would have had 0 chance to be an assistant prof. using this criteria.
K99/R00 =\= potential to succeed as independent PI

I’m horrified by this! What am I supposed to tell upcoming scientists I’m mentoring who are going for their first R01s? That they have to compete with billionaires who could easily fund their own labs?
