🌾 Less water. Fewer inputs. Higher yields. That’s the change farmer Nilamadhab Nayak has seen in Ganjam, Odisha, after adopting organic farming and the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) through ECRICC. His success is now inspiring other farmers to follow. 🌱 Implemented by @moefcc, with support from @theGCF & @UNDP_India #PlanetStartsWithPeople #ClimateResilience #SustainableAgriculture

Exciting things happening at our rice R&D project! Back in April, we teamed up with @JubileeJustice, a Black farmer co-op, to explore the potential of regenerative rice practices through the System of Rice Intensification (SRI)—a method used in many developing countries. In partnership with Cornell, we’re testing if our programs can enhance yield, nutrient density, and reduce disease pressure. Excited to share the results of this impactful collaboration soon! 🌱 #RegenerativeAg #RiceFarming #SustainableAg #HealthySoil #AgInnovation #FarmersFirst

🌾 Bridging Regional Disparities in Agriculture: A Success Story from Igatpuri, Nashik 🌱 Regional disparities in agriculture are shaped by varying access to resources like water, fertile soil, and infrastructure. In Nashik district, this divide is stark: the northern region thrives with the support of the Godavari River, enabling high agricultural productivity, particularly in banana cultivation. Meanwhile, the southern region, including Igatpuri block, struggles with limited water availability and underdeveloped facilities, leading to lower yields and fewer livelihood opportunities for farmers. Recognising these disparities, WOTR, in collaboration with @GSK , initiated a Water Resource Development and Management Programme in July 2023. The project, targeting four villages in Igatpuri block, aims to enhance water availability, improve soil health, and build the capacities of farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices. 🌿 As part of the project, WOTR introduced the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method for paddy cultivation in June 2024 through Farmer Field Schools, involving 60 farmers. The results have been encouraging, showcasing improved crop yields and reduced input costs. Demonstrations were also conducted to train farmers in preparing organic formulations like Nimboli Ark and Amrutpani, promoting the use of bio-inputs for sustainable farming. 🚜 The impact of these interventions is best illustrated through the experience of Kashinath Govind Gondake, a beneficiary farmer. Previously reliant on traditional methods and chemical fertilizers, Kashinath faced challenges such as declining soil fertility and high costs due to the distance to agricultural supply shops. With training and support from WOTR, he adopted the SRI method, which included transplanting rice seedlings at wider spacings and using Urea DAP briquettes for timely nutrient delivery. Kashinath’s demo plot under SRI yielded 10.25 quintals of paddy compared to 8.25 quintals from his control plot. This led to a gross income of Rs. 19,175 from the SRI plot, compared to Rs. 13,625 from the control plot, demonstrating the economic and agricultural benefits of adopting innovative practices. Overall, the project has significantly impacted the farming community in Igatpuri. Across the 60 participating farmers, the combined crop yield increased by more than 120 quintals, while input costs were reduced by Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,500 per farmer.💡 Read more about our work in Maharashtra: wotr.org/maharashtra/ #SustainableAgriculture #WaterConservation #FarmingInnovation #IgatpuriSuccess #SoilHealth #ClimateActionNow #WOTR4Development #WOTRat30

System of Rice Intensification (SRI) SRI is a holistic farming methodology that enhances rice production through improved crop management, soil health, and water conservation. Key Principles: 1. Early seedling transplantation (8-12 days) 2. Wider spacing (25-30 cm) 3. Alternate wetting and drying (AWD) 4. Organic amendments and compost 5. Minimal water usage 6. Reduced fertilizer and pesticide application 7. Integrated pest management (IPM) Benefits: 1. Increased yield (20-50%) 2. Water savings (30-50%) 3. Reduced fertilizer and pesticide use (50-70%) 4. Improved soil health and fertility 5. Enhanced crop resilience to climate change 6. Increased farmer income and livelihood security 7. Environmental sustainability Advantages: 1. Low-cost and low-external-input technology 2. Suitable for smallholder farmers 3. Adaptability to diverse agro-ecological conditions 4. Potential for scaling up and replication 5. Compatibility with existing farming systems Challenges: 1. Initial training and capacity building 2. Labor requirements 3. Soil and water constraints 4. Climate variability and extremes 5. Limited access to markets and credit Global Impact: 1. Over 10 million farmers across 50 countries 2. Significant yield increases in Asia, Africa, and Latin America 3. Recognized by FAO, IFAD, and World Bank 4. Integration into national agricultural policies Research and Development: 1. Climate-resilient SRI practices 2. SRI-based agroecology and ecosystem services 3. Integrated SRI and livestock systems 4. SRI and water management innovations 5. Economic and social impact assessments
