Impact of socioeconomic deprivation in patients undergoing elective surgical resection for colon cancer
➡️doi.org/10.1093/bjsopen/zrag…
Socioeconomic deprivation (SED) in colon cancer patients undergoing curative resection was not associated with short-term mortality, tumour characteristics, or chemotherapy use, but was linked to worse 3-year overall and cancer-specific survival. Patients in the most deprived group exhibited higher comorbidity and adverse lifestyle factors, including increased ASA grade, smoking prevalence, obesity, and systemic inflammation. Multivariable analysis confirmed these factors—rather than tumour biology or treatment disparities—as the principal contributors to poorer survival outcomes.

Oncological outcome after robot-assisted versus open pancreatoduodenectomy for upfront resectable cancer in the pancreatic head: a nationwide cohort analysis
➡️ doi.org/10.1093/bjs/znaf153
In this nationwide registry-based study, the oncological outcome including 5-year survival was comparable between patients undergoing robot-assisted and open pancreatoduodenectomy for primary resectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and distal cholangiocarcinoma without vascular contact

Standardization of the surgical technique and reporting for radical right colectomy with central vascular ligation and complete mesocolic excision (RRoC-STAR): Delphi consensus
➡️doi.org/10.1093/bjsopen/zraf…
This study provides an international expert consensus-based definition and standardization of terminology and the surgical steps required to perform radical right colectomy with complete mesocolic excision, central vascular ligation, and D3 lymphadenectomy. A comprehensive data sheet for reporting radical right colectomy is introduced to enable data homogenization from current and future studies.

Effect of transverse versus midline periumbilical incision on incisional hernia and short-term outcomes after laparoscopic colon cancer surgery: multicentre, open-label, randomized clinical trial
➡️doi.org/10.1093/bjsopen/zraf…
In this multicentre, randomized clinical trial involving 174 patients, the incidence of radiological incisional hernia after 12 months was significantly lower in the transverse incision group (6%) compared with the midline incision group (18%). A transverse periumbilical incision may reduce the risk of incisional hernia in laparoscopic colon cancer surgery.
