The Home and Dry campaign, which first launched in 2020 to improve fishing safety and reduce the number of fatalities in the industry, has produced a series of excellent safety videos which we will be posting here over the next few weeks - do please share with colleagues.

Good to see early progress on our new HQ, which will also house the Scottish Seafood Centre of Excellence here in Fraserburgh. As well as our administrative and corporate functions, there will be space in the new two-storey building for training activity on safety, performance and resource efficiency. We hope also to attract UK-hosted international fisheries meeting and delegations. #fisheries #scottishfisheries @Aberdeenshire

Out of the 12k commercial #fishers, just 18 are #women. The industry desperately needs to recruit, but there is still a lot of #sexism & superstition.

Or that fishermen introduce numerous closed areas each year to protect spawning cod, or that we left tens of thousands of tons of haddock in the sea last year and this year to reduce the impact on cod

Interesting that ICES advice allows fir an increase in North Sea Cod by up to 44% and that the same ICES is to look at the high possibility that the northern, west of scotland cod population is the same as northern North Sea. Don’t hear you mentioning that?

@Bluemarinef, call me a cynic, but how interesting to note that campaigns such as that with cod centre around a book launch. similar self promotion to that of @HughFW. of interest is the ICES advice for NS Cod for 2023
of a 44% increase in catches.

@trussliz The fishing industry is crying out for a solution to its crewing problems, no crew, no fishing, no fish. We ask that you make this a priority if gain the hot seat! We deserve no less #sustainablefishing

@DefraGovUK @david_duguid Price of fuel to the vessels now hovering at £1 per litre. Being price takers, not price makers, leaves commercial fishermen economically vulnerable. It’s time for fiscal package to support it #FoodSecurity #feedthenation

@swfpa the data you refer to was shared in confidence but also with the aim of being transparent. From over 350 trips, cod bycatch was less than 0.5% yet you focus on data points which suit your agenda. This behaviour is despicable and shows why industry can not trust you.

So true. I have worked hard to reassure our fishermen that restrictions will only be imposed where evidence supports such action. This development shows that fishermen were quite right to tell me that Scot Gov can’t be trusted and will backflip for a vote.

Trust is hard-won, and easily lost. By this surprise announcement Marine Scotland jeopardises not only their relationship with the fishing industry, but also the success of future #management and conservation efforts. (9/9)
