Dolores Huerta was a hero of mine.
When she co-founded the National Farm Workers Association in 1962, people thought Dolores was crazy. βHow are you going to organize farm workers,β she remembered being asked. "They are poor, powerless immigrants.β But thatβs exactly what she did, helping thousands of migrant laborers working in brutal conditions make their voices heard, and demand something better.
Dolores spent the rest of her life fighting for marginalized communities, even as she herself faced sexism and abuse β including, as she revealed earlier this year, from Cesar Chavez and others within her own movement. She also came up with a pretty good slogan, βSi, se puedeβ β Yes, we can β that I too often get credit for. But as usual, Dolores got there first.
Michelle and I are thinking of Doloresβs family, the people whose lives she changed, and everyone who drew inspiration from her example.

Just like every other time kids get exposed for saying or doing racist stuff, nothing happensβThey finish high school, go to college, and some end up becoming decisive and influential people in society.
The video of the HS kids on the bus saying the N-word, just like the HS kids dressed up as Klan members doing it, will be long forgotten before the weekend.
And people will say βThe Internet is foreverβ but wonβt remember this the same way they donβt remember the racist behaviors they saw in videos last year, or even last month, because thereβs something new to rage about dailyβand racism isnβt at the top of anyoneβs rage-retainer list.
This is *absolutely nothing new,* only shown more because itβs recorded more and displayed across social media.
