Let’s go back to 1988. I was an elementary-age kid living near the construction site of what would become the Suncoast Dome in St. Pete. Rumors of a baseball team were circulating. Would that ever happen? My family lived below the poverty line, so going to a game wasn’t even on my radar. But maybe we could have our own team. Then, in 1998, the league expanded. I was in Kentucky and headed to college. But the Devil Rays were my team, even if I couldn’t watch most of the games. By the mid-2000s, I could stream them on a new service called MLBtv. The Devil Rays had my heart. To this day, Crime Dog remains my favorite all-time player. I got married in 2006, and my wife and I moved to Southwest Florida in 2008. I had been following that miracle season from Indiana, but now I lived here. There’s a whole story behind how I got a World Series ticket, but I ended up at the one game we won against the Phillies. Fast-forward to today. My wife and I are taking all four of our kids to their first World Series game to watch our team, the Tampa Bay Rays, play in our favorite place on earth: Tropicana Field. That poor St. Pete kid from the 1980s couldn’t have imagined this day. Baseball is more than a game for us. It’s where we spend time as a family and make memories. Seeing the Trop torn to shreds two years ago was devastating, like watching part of your life get ripped apart. Now we’re back, and the tilted dome stands as a symbol of our community’s resilience. Today is emotional for me, in all the right ways. Of course, I hope we win, but I’ve already won. The people I love most are living a dream with me that I never knew was possible. Let’s do this, Tampa Bay. #ForTampaBay – at St Petersburg, FL

You become what you celebrate. Culture often takes shape at the moment of celebration. Celebrate the wrong things, and you become something you’re not meant to be. What you praise, why you praise, how you praise, and whom you praise will determine who you are. Celebrate who God is, and you become who He wants you to be.

Understanding the history of an established church is critically important, especially as a new pastor. You inherit the story the day you arrive, whether you know it or not. The past explains the present. Why does the congregation flinch when you mention a building project? Why does one family carry so much weight in business meetings? Why is there a strange tension around the old fellowship hall? Why is that scary-looking guy’s portrait on the wall? The answers are almost always historical. churchanswers.com/blog/pasto…

What’s happening in France is a travesty. Pray for the church’s witness in the midst of this complete chaos.

A good local sports writer should inspire you to follow the team, not leave loyal fans feeling defeated, all while maintaining a realistic perspective (in my opinion). This article from @romano_tbtimes is excellent, and what I hope is an indicator of more things to come from the Times. #ForTampaBay tampabay.com/viewpoints/2026…

Do NOT reduce pastoral qualifications to theological knowledge and preaching ability. Often overlooked: “He must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must be able to teach.” (1 Timothy 3:2) Hospitality is just as important as preaching ability. Success as a pastor is determined just as much ACROSS the table as IN the pulpit.

What a great event! We were honored to recognize these twelve churches. Thankful for our ministry partners who made it happen.
This month, Church Answers hosted our first annual awards banquet in Franklin, Tennessee. We recognized twelve churches and pastors, and each award was sponsored by a ministry partner. For a few hours, the people who usually serve others were served. go.churchanswers.com/4dFcwkg
