Like millions of you, our hearts are reeling from the senseless killing of Javits Frimpong, a beautiful 15-year-old child with his whole life ahead of him. Javits was the beloved youngest sibling among five. He was helpful and studious. He was kind and family-oriented, and resilient and resourceful since a young age. Javits was planning to become a doctor, a healer. He was a Bronxite. A Ghanian. An immigrant. The child of a cab driver. Yesterday, our union, along with @nyctaxi Commissioner Midori Valdivia and Japneet Singh, visited Javits' older siblings and his father, our brother Thomas. We talked with Thomas about how so many people see themselves or their children in Javits and how the sweetness of his child has opened millions of hearts. He knows Javits is still meant to be a healer, through new policies around bullying and gun control in his memory. Javits' beautiful face will live on in our memories; as will the ever-lasting image of Thomas leaning against his taxi in his shock and grief. We see the immeasurable pain of our brother, a noble and gentle man who has raised five glorious children while working long and hard hours as a cab driver. Javits' older siblings told us their father is their hero. If you know Thomas Frimpong, you can easily see why.
