On October 25, 1999, Officer Desmond Casey was attempting to duplicate a mechanical problem he experienced with AIR1 two nights prior which caused him to perform an emergency landing at Reid Hillview Airport. The mechanical problem could not be duplicated and all systems were functioning properly. Officer Casey and a certified mechanic decided to fly the aircraft back to Mineta San Jose International Airport for further tests. While on final approach to the airport, AIR1 went unexpectedly out of control. Officer Casey struggled with the controls and guided the helicopter to a location north of Highway 880 and The Alameda where no one on the ground would be injured. Despite Officer Casey’s heroic maneuver, the helicopter crashed landed, killing Officer Casey and the mechanic on impact. Officer Casey was the tenth San Jose Police Officer to die in the line of duty.

Over fifty volunteers from Beautiful Day of WestGate Church dedicated over four weekends of their time to help remodel an office space located at the City of San José's PAL Stadium. Once a dilapidated office, this newly remodeled space will now be used by Officers during their shifts to write reports and take their breaks. Beautiful Day of WestGate Church mobilizes volunteers to help with projects that address tangible needs that positively impact the community. These community partnerships are what makes San Jose such a great city. Thank you to WestGate Church and to the San Jose Police Chaplaincy for coming together to help Officers have an inviting and clean space during their shifts. 💕💕💕

Over the weekend, Southern Division Patrol Officers conducted a vehicle enforcement stop that resulted in the discovery of a privately made firearm with a loaded magazine. During the stop, Officers made contact with six males, with one admitting there were open containers and marijuana in the car. During a probable cause search of the vehicle, Officers subsequently located a glass jar with marijuana, as well as the loaded firearm. The 18-year-old suspect associated to the seized firearm, who came all the way from the city of Prunedale, was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for multiple crimes related to firearm, narcotics, and alcohol possession. The San Jose Police Department would like to remind visitors that if you choose to come to San Jose, which is a good choice by the way, please remember to be on your best behavior.

The house didn’t win this one 🎰🚔 In September 2026, SJPD officers with the assistance of the Special Operations Metro Unit, developed information about suspected illegal gambling and controlled-substance activity at a residence located in the 4500 block of Houndshaven Way. On September 25, with assistance of the Special Operations MERGE Unit, officers served a search warrant at the residence. During the search, officers seized 15 illegal gambling machines, thousands in cash, and approximately 39 grams of methamphetamine. Four suspects were arrested, including the primary suspect who was booked for offenses related to illegal gambling, conspiracy, and possession of narcotics. Three additional suspects were booked on outstanding warrants and for obstructing a peace officer in the performance of their duties. When the odds are stacked against you, maybe don’t add “obstructing a peace officer” to the bet. Investigations like this are one part of our ongoing commitment to keeping San José neighborhoods safe. When our community and officers work together, we can take action against criminal activity and help keep our neighborhoods safer.

And just like that, S.T.A.R. Camp is underway! ⭐️ This morning, Assistant Chief Miri was proud to welcome and kick off this year’s S.T.A.R. Camp, where young students from Title I schools are given an opportunity to step outside their everyday surroundings, build meaningful relationships with their peers and SJPD personnel, and create memories that will last a lifetime. From archery, nature hikes, campfires, teamwork, and new friendships, every activity is an opportunity to put into practice the values at the heart of S.T.A.R.—Strength, Truth, Achievement, and Respect. More than just a camp, S.T.A.R. is about connection and showing our youth that they are seen, supported, capable, and surrounded by a community that believes in them. Welcome to S.T.A.R. Camp, let the adventure begin! 🏕️

Chief Joseph was out in the community today with the Hayes Neighborhood Association and Comanche Blossom Valley Neighborhood Association! 👮‍♂️🥁 From listening to residents and addressing neighborhood concerns to connecting with families and even jamming on the drums, today was a great example of community policing in action! When neighbors speak, we listen and we work to address issues promptly, including tagging abandoned vehicles and coordinating towing if possible. 🚗 Strong police-community partnerships make our neighborhoods safer, stronger, and more connected. Thank you to everyone who welcomed us today! 🤝🏘️

We all have a role to play in suicide prevention. Together, we can help. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and a critical time to remind people that they are not alone. Santa Clara County residents can call or text 9-8-8 anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to speak with a trained counselor. Services are free and confidential. Together we can build safe communities with strong connections and resources to help those who are experiencing a crisis.

Another clandestine gambling establishment has been shut down following an investigation by SJPD Patrol Officers in east San Jose today.  After several months of gathering information, Officers obtained search warrants and, with the assistance of the Special Operations MERGE Unit, served the warrant at the location. During the search, Officers seized 14 large illegal gambling machines, approximately 13 pounds of marijuana, a large amount of cash, narcotics, and parts and equipment used to manufacture illegal gambling machines.  Five subjects were arrested for multiple crimes, including operating an illegal gambling establishment, operating a drug house, possession of narcotics, felony bookkeeping, among other offenses. An additional seventeen individuals were cited for illegal gambling. Our proactive patrol officers continue to work diligently to identify and address illegal operations that impact the safety and quality of life of our community.

25 years later, we remember. This evening, Chief Joseph attended the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at Oak Hill Memorial Park to honor the lives lost, the heroes who answered the call, and the families who carried the weight of that day. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
Always remembered. Never forgotten. 🇺🇸
