The Opposition and Left Liberals celebrated Chandrachud for judgments on privacy, Section 377, Sabarimala and more. Now Kaul’s memoir criticising his approach to judicial appointments has become ammunition against him. From Karnan vs Kaul to Kaul vs Chandrachud, the selective outrage is hard to miss. Add the deleted Congress Kerala post targeting Justice Surya Kant and the Opposition’s march to the Supreme Court, and the hypocrisy becomes even clearer. Judicial independence cannot be defended selectively.

When Chandrachud delivered judgments they liked, the Opposition and Left Liberals hailed him as progressive and independent. Now Kaul’s memoir is being used to question him. Meanwhile, photos of Kaul at a Diwali gathering are being circulated, Congress Kerala’s post targeting Justice Surya Kant was deleted after backlash, and Rahul Gandhi-led Opposition leaders marched to the Supreme Court premises. You cannot preach judicial independence one day and pressure the judiciary the next. Institutions are bigger than political convenience.
