When visualizing for big events, it helps to have visited the place in person beforehand.
It's easier to feel comfortable when you are familiar with where you are at.
Even just having a 'spot', a team camp, knowing where the bathroom is, or food makes a BIG difference in your ability to feel safe, secure, and certain.
It doesn't matter if it's a state or national level competition, a dual meet, taking the SATs or a wedding, if you've been there before you will act like you've been there before.
Your environment will be less threatening.
What happens if you CAN'T go there ahead of time?
For whatever reason, $$, time, schedule, logistics, etc.
Well, if it exists on Google Earth, there's most likely a street view of it.
If there's a street view of it you can use VR to 'walk' around as if you were there live.
Many popular and large indoor locations also have indoor snapshots or Streetview. So if you're in a stadium, a football field, etc. You've got a good shot you can see where you will be from multiple angles.
It's not exactly the same as going around live, because it's only one of your senses (vision and maybe sound), but what it will do is familiarize yourself with the area.
You'll have landmarks, things to look for and recognize that someone else wouldn't know exists.
Going back to your visualization practice then, if you have a specific gameplan or strategy, it's more real when you are making it more real.
An easy cheat for getting in mental reps is visualizing during the cooldown.
In indoor season after I was done with block starts and any technical work the day before a meet I'd do one lap around the track from a different lane.
I'd picture the phases of my race. What I'd need to execute.
What good looked like.
What it would feel like at this part of the track.
Any recent workouts that cemented this proof.
It doesn't take long to walk 200m. Maybe a couple minutes at most.
But it was intentional and thoughtful and for me it worked better than wasting a ton of energy trying to sneak in more physical reps I didn't need.
We already did enough physical work. Tune ups are just as important for you brain as your body.
Oh...😥 What a legend!
Frank “Gags” Gagliano, the Hall of Fame coach who guided more than a dozen Olympians across six decades, has died. He was 89.
Gagliano coached at nearly every level of the sport. As an assistant at Manhattan College, he helped the Jaspers win the 1973 NCAA indoor team title. He spent 18 years leading Georgetown, where his teams won 23 Big East championships and produced 140 All-Americans, and he was twice named national coach of the year.
At an age when most coaches retire, he became one of the country’s top professional coaches. He led the Reebok Enclave, the Nike Farm Team, Oregon Track Club Elite and, from 2010, the New Jersey-New York Track Club. His Olympians included John Trautmann, Steve Holman, Nicole Teter, Jonathon Riley, Nick Symmonds, Christian Smith, Julie Culley and Donn Cabral. At the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, Symmonds and Smith were part of the famous “Oregon Sweep” of the men’s 800m at Hayward Field.
A Bronx native, Gagliano was a quarterback at the University of Richmond, not a runner. He began coaching track in 1960 at Roselle Catholic High School in New Jersey, which had hired him with the promise of starting a football team that never came. In 1965, Roselle Catholic became the first high school to win both the DMR and 2-mile relay at the Penn Relays.
“I didn’t know anything about track,” he said in a 2014 interview. “But I accepted the offer because I really wanted to coach.”
Gags became one of the most influential coaches in American distance running. His philosophy was simple: strength plus speed. And when you hear “Hit it!” on the final turn, change gears.
Gagliano was inducted into the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame in 2003. This July, USA Track and Field named the men’s 800m at its national championships in his honor.

I had Michael Phelps fill out a goal sheet when he was eleven (I coached him through all 5 of his Olympics).
On the front he wrote, "I want to swim in the Olympics."
I didn't find out what he really wanted until I turned the page over. 🧵

Amen!
There’s something special about being part of something bigger than yourself. Something that asks you to put aside your own interests, commit to something greater, and understand that the journey was never just about you.
In today’s day and age, that seems to be getting harder to find and even harder to embrace.
The players, coaches, and parents who do it best eventually look back and realize that the greatest part of the experience wasn’t always the wins, the recognition, or the individual accomplishments. It was the journey.
It was the relationships built, the adversity overcome, the lessons learned, and the memories made along the way. It was learning to put the team first, sacrifice for one another, and understand that you were part of something bigger than yourself.
The real reward of team athletics isn’t just what you accomplish together. It’s who you become along the way and the people who share that journey with you.
One day, you’ll look back and realize just how special it was to be part of something bigger than yourself.
This is gold! If you can get teams to do this, it's so powerful.
NO BETTER EXAMPLE OF CULTURE
Culture = "There's a way that we play."
⚾️The @Brewers have clear standards.
⚾️The veterans live them.
⚾️They teach them to the new guys.
⚾️The leaders enforce them and call guys up to the standard.

I am not a big baseball fan but my late father took me to Brewer games. One of my fondest memories is going to our small town local hardware store to get a glove for T-ball and playing catch. I had a placemat with the 1982 team on it. He LOVED the Brewers. He would LOVE this. ❤️
I have been blessed to have several athlete leaders like this over the years, guys who affected and influenced teams in a positive and very powerful way. They are the difference makers and make your culture special.
Is your best player bought in to you and your team?
If so, special things can happen...
