zero iq: politicians shouldn’t weight on in internal debates. also zero iq: the dsa left should just elect our own prominent officials. 10,000 iq: lowkey i think if claire hung out with me for a bit she’d realize r&r’s chill and endorse world to win.

words aren’t magic. but some words tell us a lot about politicians. Geese have a fair underlying idea: that it’s the balance of forces that shapes the election. But they’re naive as to how certain key questions tell us a great deal about the *method* of a candidate.
As LA makes it choice for mayor, DSA remains paralyzed over how to relate to Nithya Raman, especially in the aftermath of her remarks identifying herself as a "capitalist." T.E. Moon (@TEMoon333) asks if any set of magic words can separate one socialist elected from another and whether "disciplining electeds" is a coherent goal in the first place. I, and many others, was able to predict this, not because words have a magic quality, but because socialists have learned to predict, with decent consistency that if a candidate backs down on certain key issues they tend to be more generally unaligned with DSA

Words are not magic, but they are evidence. Often, a candidate’s stances on a certain set of red line issues is the strongest evidence we have of how genuine a candidate’s commitment to the emerging democratic socialist party-like forces.

I think Groundwork deserve a fair bit of credit for opposing endorsing Raman loudly and early.

Raman was pitched as an LA Zohran. She’s not. She wont defend BDS. She can’t even explain what socialism is. It was wildly irresponsible of the chapter to endorse someone so ill prepared to represent DSA in such an important position.
Is L.A. mayoral candidate Nithya Raman a capitalist? "I'm a capitalist and I'm also a Democratic Socialist...we need to make sure capitalism works without harm to workers... to poor people." She says the DSA is a "big tent" but she disagrees with members who call to abolish police, prisons and the Senate. Interview via @InsidePolitics on @CNN

Los Angeles DSA should be given one last chance to get Raman on board with BDS and to get her to actually identify as a socialist. If they can’t, then i’m sorry but she needs to be expelled. We can’t have someone representing us when she can’t defend our most basic positions.
