The marketing push for ROAR! (1981), the infamous film which saw 72 members of cast and crew injured by big cats, included comic strips printed in British weeklies like 2000AD. Drawn by the late, great Steve Dillon, they only hint at the jaw-dropping stuff in the film.
CHRISTMAS TOUR! Me and @Bob_Fischer have got December wrapped up: tickets now onsale for our brand-new festive show! It's a selection box of dark pop culture, with Box of Delights, K-9 & Company, ghost stories, Blake's 7, EastEnders, and more!

THRILLER: A PLACE TO DIE (1973) Brian Clemens' anthology took a hard left into pure folk horror with this tale of a couple, Bruce and Tessa, who move to a beautiful village with friendly locals. But the villagers have sinister designs on Tessa...

This Weekly News advert (circa late 70s?) encapsulates the era perfectly: flying saucers are given more prominence than a Mafia confession, all topped off with Crossroads and a picture of a half-naked woman. A proto-Take a Break if ever I saw one.
ULYSSES 31: THE KINGDOM OF HADES (1981): French/Japanese/Luxembourgian sci-fi version of The Odyssey. Despite being a CCBC Broom Cupboard-era fave with a singalong theme song, it had a fair few dark, scary moments...

"Ooh, nasty!" KNIGHTMARE (1987) was TV's toughest gameshow. Treguard the Dungeon Master presided over a blue-screen labyrinth where adventurers didn't just fail, they 'died', falling prey to blades, spikes, and deadly drops!
THE TOMORROW PEOPLE: THE DIRTIEST BUSINESS (1977) Mike falls in love with a young Russian telepath, but the KGB have other plans for her... blimey, what an ending there!
THE THREE BILLY GOATS GRUFF (1968): Ladybird books were famously safe, cosy fare for toddlers and preschoolers. But this adaptation of the classic Norwegian fairy tale features a troll that haunted their nightmares...

I always love a bit of archive continuity, and here's one showing BBC1 introducing its repeat showing of classic rabies drama THE MAD DEATH on 14 June 1985. Saturday's Val Doonican Show was possibly even scarier.
