Gino lost!
A federal judge granted Harvard summary judgment on all of Francesca Gino's claims (contract, sex discrimination, retaliation). Harvard's defamation counterclaim and sanctions motion are still pending, so she could lose even more.

In a devastating 1rst-person piece, NYC education advocate and mom Adriana Aviles tells how her son received the highest grades in math throughout elementary and middle school in Queens’ District 26, the best in the city.
Yet now in high school, she soon discovered, “He couldn’t solve basic algebra. He couldn’t do geometry. He couldn’t compute elementary-school fractions."
“My shock soon gave way to heartbreak, then anger. The NYC education system had betrayed my son to make itself look better."
“I failed too. I didn’t scrutinize his work closely or check his performance on state test scores because I figured if his report cards were good then everything was fine.”
“I looked back and discovered he was deemed ‘not proficient’ in math on a 7th-grade state exam.”

Hotels seem to manage this problem just fine.
No, it’s efficiency improving for Airbnbs to clean garbage for their guests, whose opportunity cost of their time while on vacation is much higher than the cleaners who are already cleaning the unit. And, after all, guests already are charged for the cleaning up of garbage.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto got $100M more than he was originally predicted to get, and he’s still going to turn out to be an alltime bargain at $325M.

Prince was asked to do a solo on a cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps and he showed up to the rehearsal and barely played anything. Didn’t have any solo ready at all and didn’t play one. They asked what he was going to play and he just said “Don’t worry about it.”
Then, on the night of the performance he just looms out of the shadows and plays this. The way he pivots off that F# root note into Dorian mode is so good. Massively underrated guitarist.

On AI capabilities: the French press is all over the Haitian-Canadian novel C’était ça ou mourir. It's winning basically every award you can win, and was tipped to be the 2nd Canadian winner of the Prix Goncourt. Only one problem: 1/2
Google-authored and Google-funded study finds Google AI is pretty much terrific! News at 11.

Human capital can be a thing and also not be the main explanation of differences across countries. There has been some good evidence on human capital in recent years, such as the below.

Neale of course deductibles have been rising. Us health economists have been telling people high deductible health plans are the best type of plan for most people.
And that is good advice, IMO.

@Noahpinion correctly emphasizes SHARE. Part of the story is that total spending as a share of GDP is 50% higher in the US, dragging down this stat.
The other key point is that the average masks large differences across insurance plans.
Most people with Medicare and roughly half with Marketplace and employer sponsored insurance have moderate cost sharing or less.
Everybody else with coverage is increasingly exposed to massive out-of-pocket costs. We calculate that 63 million have a deductible of $1,500 or more. KFF data shows that the average deductible for ESI has increased from $500 to near $1,900 over the last 20 years.
And this is not to mention the 27 million Americans with no coverage at all.

AL All-Star leading vote-getter Ernie Clement is part of the Bills Mafia and went through a table at his tailgate, alongside a gnarled old Bills-themed RV called Precious. He also answered the vital question: When it's 8 a.m., should you drink a wedge or Labatt Blue Light?
This seems like bad news for zucman’s arguments about growth and taxes. Growth was much higher in the lower tax period before wwii.

Second main result: the timing of growth reverses. The conventional view puts the peak of US growth in the postwar "golden age" — but that view rests on price data from exactly the black-hole period.
We estimate real goods-consumption growth of 5.4%/yr in 1900–1939 vs 4.2% in 1946–1983 (existing estimates: 2.0% and 3.1%). Productivity shows the same reversal. (8/9)
