Eli Northrup will be voted in tonight, uncontested, to represent Assembly District 69 on the Upper West Side and in Morningside Heights. Northrup ran for the seat as a first-time candidate in 2024, where he collected an impressive 34 percent of the vote and finished 2nd to Micah Lasher. Eli ran again when the seat opened up in 2025 and won the Democratic primary by more than 20 points. He did not work in politics. He was not a handpicked successor. He was not part of the political machine of the neighborhood. I asked Eli today about how it felt to be at the moment where his years-long journey to public office came to fruition: “I was reflecting on it last night and this morning because you’re in this weird, liminal space when you don’t have an opponent in the general. It takes so much work. It is very, very hard to bring yourself from a civilian to running for office. It’s a huge challenge. So many people go into it. People who believe in you and help you and volunteer. Your family. Your friends. People who make sacrifices. For me, it was running a losing race at first. I want to remind myself this is an enormous accomplishment and responsibility to represent this community. Maybe it will sink in tonight. But I do feel ready for it. I believe that I am.”
