So I'm hanging out a shingle in newsletter land. Two reviews a week. Seven bucks a month. As Alfred E. Neuman would say, "Cheap!" Details below. splicedpersonality.substack.…

Why is your ignorance my problem?
OK, I'll bite. If John Cassavetes is so insanely influential and brilliant, why have I not heard about him until recently?
I've been on a side-quest with classic and esoteric movies, mostly through the Criterion collection. I've watched dozens of Criterion closet picks from filmmakers and actors I admire.
They pick Cassavetes films ALL THE TIME. Probably more than any other director except Scorsese. I haven't seen a single Cassavetes film. I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about a Cassavetes film outside of those videos.
I'm not a slouch on film, I've got a pretty wide spread on what I've seen & what I appreciate. How has Cassavetes slipped through that net so completely for so long?

Bill Shatner is not a friend but his work on Boston Legal cannot be disputed. He brought a great deal to his performance.
Over at the Spliced Personality Substack this week I reviewed FJORD, and I think I found a way to aggravate just about everybody. splicedpersonality.substack.…
LEGEND (1985, Scott, *1/2) Not the worst Tom Cruise movie I’ve seen this month. At least I got a good nap in.

Maybe if you channeled all this anger into swimming faster you wouldn’t have come in fifth.

The Somerville Theater is the city's north star and one of the best places to see a movie for the first time, so naturally, I'm overjoyed by this news!

UNION TOWN (2026, Kopple, ***1/2) She’s really good at these movies. It’s just a shame she has to keep making them.

Indeed.
There's only one reason he's doing this: to stop Alex Gibney's new documentary "Musk" from being streamed on HBO Max in January.
@alexgibneyfilm predicted it and it's happening.
Go see the film NOW. Before you can't.
Over at the Spliced Personality Substack I reviewed A TALENT FOR MURDER, in which Alden Ehrenreich makes a terrific Tom Ripley, believe it or not. splicedpersonality.substack.…
