👉 “In fact, the previous Liberal government that founded the Greenbelt did not “take” any land - it remains entirely in private hands.  After broad public consultations, it codified pre-existing restrictions - signalling that sensitive lands would not be rezoned on a whim”
Doug Ford’s Tories are sinking deeper into their Greenbelt quagmire and sliding fast in the polls. But the premier has a bold new plan to dig himself out: Bulldoze even more protected lands. Enrich even more developers. Today's column: thestar.com/politics/politic…

Another shocking day in the #GreenbeltScandal Following demands to return lands wrongly removed from the Greenbelt, the Premier announces a review of the *entire* Greenbelt. Why? There is no logic to this. His own taskforce has made it clear that Greenbelt lands are not required and will not assist in driving housing supply. Changing the Greenbelt should never have been on the table. Putting the entire Greenbelt on the table is irrational. We have a housing crisis. Could we please focus on the 55 recommendations in the Housing Affordability Taskforce Report, instead of these Greenbelt shenanigans?

So, the Ford government swapped a bunch of protected Greenbelt land for its developer buddies through a rigged process to build housing that could have been much better built elsewhere. The developers stand to make billions. And no one is resigning.

Ontario Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk says Premier Doug Ford’s plan for the Greenbelt was biased, truncated, lacking expertise across different ministries — and select developers had access to Housing Minister’s Chief of Staff.

Electing good people matters. For all the checks and balances, at the end of the day government only works with good elected people who are truly serving the public - which is the job.

The great Greenbelt give-a-way. A handful of developers to reap $8.3 billion in profit from a process rigged by Progressive Conservatives to make them wealthy. The report makes it clear: these are unserviced lands. Opening them up for development will have no impact on our housing crisis. It will take decades just to get servicing in place. Further, staff were directed by the Premier's office to ignore environmental or agricultural concerns. Not shocking, but a confirmation - in writing, and as a result of a comprehensive due diligence process, of what we had suspected over the course of the past 12 months. What should happen next? 1. Reverse the policy changes and send the developers packing? 2. Should *someone* be stepping down?! 3. Criminal charges? Is this fraud? According to the Criminal Code, "anyone who commits fraud is guilt of an indictable offence and is subject to a prison term." Curious where this goes - seems like there are two parts: 1) accountability for this mess and 2) preventing the disaster of what has been done from proceeding. #ProtectOurGreenbelt tvo.org/article/ford-friendl…

As we breathe smoke from climate change-worsened fires, consider that @fordnation and @ThermeCanada will: -bulldoze parkland and 850 mature trees -build a giant indoor energy sink of a spa -needlessly replace rather than repair the Science Centre -spend $500M public $ on parking

In 2015, for $30M, the Province rebuilt 7.5 acres of Ontario Place to create Trillium Park. In 2023, the Province plans to spend $300M - $600M to build an underground parking lot for a private spa operator, ostensibly to realize 12 acres of public space.

As we all speculate on who will enter the mayoral race, and how votes might split, it’s a good time to remember that, at the peak of the pandemic, @fordnation passed an Act that revoked the option for municipalities to conduct ranked ballot elections.

Who benefits from Ford’s sprawl override? In a sprawl, houses and shops are so far apart that property taxes don’t cover infrastructure upkeep. And when taxes can’t cover costs, they go up. #Opinion by Simon Woodside trib.al/GuhdYsG

My colleague @ColinDMello asked @fordnation why anyone should now believe his promise to rescind legislation if CUPE calls off the strike. Colin pointed to Ford’s promise not to build on the Greenbelt back in 2018. Last Friday he said there’d be housing there. #onpoli – at Toronto, Ontario
