Cassavetes is one of my biggest blindspots, but I loved The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. A friend told me A Woman Under the Influence seems like my kind of movie, so I'll definitely try to watch a couple more of his films before the year is up. boxd.it/gALNGB

I call it the "best" because I appreciate it more. If you want to call the other one "best", all power to you.

My standards for what I personally call "best" and "favourite" are different. You do not have to subscribe to this way of judging art, you just have to accept that many others do.

"Best" is an opinion. You can defend it through one's knowledge and standards of the art in question. "Favourite" is a fact. It requires no explanation. xitter.cf/5af10z/status/21042513…
People who differentiate between “best” and “favourite” are usually just too embarrassed to call their favourite movie the best movie of all time.

I feel this should be obvious but I’ve had people disagree with me about it so I’ll say it anyway: A/an before initials, an acronym, or a single letter should correspond to how the acronym is read, not how it would be read when expanded. “An NDA”, not “a NDA”.
What's the word/grammar hill you are absolutely dying on?

Do I agree with all the placements on this list? No. But if you're remotely tuned into TV news, trends, and common consensus, this list shouldn't really surprise you. Pretty much the canon of the American TV industry opinion. xitter.cf/TheLOSTworld_/status/2…
The New York Times’ final list of the 100 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century is now complete. What do you make of the final ranking? Which placements surprised you the most?

Y’know, 4 of the top 10 in common with the NYT, not bad. Louie should be higher than 41st, but given CK was cancelled, it’s higher than I would have expected.
I’m definitely comedy-biased when it comes to TV. Wanted to include The IT Crowd, but I couldn’t in good conscience suggest it’s a better show than The Office.

The reason is that Americans have a unique culture of prioritising professional ambition over things like empathy, society, the common good, etc. stemming from their capitalist structures and individualist roots.

@SebMadeInChina reviews Chris Rock’s buzzy return to the director’s chair, #MistyGreen, at #TIFF. “Misty Green has its moments, but it’s bogged down by a clichéd script, some messy editing, & a weak performance by the director himself.” Full review → fantasyfilmball.com/review.h…

Judge Judy is retiring — whatever — but this second paragraph is one of the funniest pieces of journalism I’ve read all year. Not sure how intentional Eric Andersson of People Magazine was being, but juxtaposing wholesome retirement activities with THAT is funny shit.

And then the quote about her wanting to spread her “message” with, again, an adult animated series based on AI videos of her as a baby? Chef’s kiss.

My friends and I came up with a list of eight filmmakers whose voices will define this decade of cinema (for better or worse) come the end of it. - Schoenbrun - Lord/Miller - Nolan - Villeneuve - Jude - Fennell - Guadagnino - Lanthimos Who are we missing?

The failure of End of Oak Street represents a failure in what we've become as a moviegoing audience. Earnest silliness is met with scoffs and cynicism. Dishonest silliness with a sheen of seriousness and an MCU logo at the front is met with 2 billion at the box office.

I can see the appeal of City of God (2002) — it's fast-paced and stylistically interesting — but I just can't find a way to connect with the turn-of-the-century trend of gritty, edgy realism with quick cuts and frenetic camera movements. A good movie nonetheless. 7/10

Movies like 21 Grams, Requiem for a Dream, Man on Fire, even Scorsese's Bringing Out the Dead. I like most of these films as a whole, and appreciate the formal elements, they just don't appeal to me stylistically.
