There is some variation across countries and personal characteristics. However, these deviations are small compared to the overall substantive positive effects of intermediaries on news exposure.

Separating within-person variation from stable between-person differences, we find positive effects of daily intermediary use on political and non-political news use, amid an increased diversity of news sources and news types.

Here we analyzed the web browsing histories of more than 7,000 study participants in six countries and the content of visited news URLs. A clickstream analysis first shows that all intermediaries increase the likelihood that the next visit is a news site.
