The biggest, and stupidest, myth in European politics, particularly popular in France, is that Europe suffers the consequences of "austerity" and "neoliberalism". In the biggest 5 countries in Europe, more than half of the population makes its income from the state, less than half from the private sector. This is what makes the problem of reducing the welfare state so impossible: more than half of the voters are net recipients. No surprise that Italy's budget has not been balanced in 100 years, France's in 50 years (ooh la la, l'austérité!!): -France: 30 million from the state versus 21m private sector workers. State spending is 57% of GDP, taxes more than half the economy. The budget hasn't been balanced in the lifetime of most French (since 1974). - Germany: 35 million adults from the state, versus 34 million from the private sector. 10% of the population is registered as severely disabled. Public spending is over half of GDP. Germany has had a continuous budget deficit since 2019. -Italy: 23 million from the state, versus 20.5 million private-sector workers. Public spending is 51% of GDP. Italy has had a budget deficit every year since 1925, for 100 years. - Spain more people get their income from the state since 2024: 18.21 million from the public sector versus 17.9 million people working in the private sector. Since 2025, Spain also had more government employees than self-employed workers (autónomos) for the first time in history. State spending is at 45%, budget has not been balanced since 2007. - UK: 54% of households now receive more in state benefits than they pay in taxes. State spending is 44.5% of GDP, taxes (40%) are at their highest since 1950, the budget hasn't been balanced since 2001, and 1 in 5 new cars is paid by the government through a bizarre state disability scheme (Motability).

Uruguay and Argentina sit on opposite banks of the same river. The top 1% in Uruguay hold 40.5% of national wealth. In Argentina, 25.8%. That is a 1.5x gap between neighbors. latinometrics.com/articles/h…

WOAH! Nubank is in talks to buy Monzo for up to $13bn Once the darling of the UK fintech scene. Now an acquisition target. Sky News reports early talks valuing Monzo at £8bn to £10bn ($13bn), about double its £4.5bn valuation in 2024. Its board is also weighing a new round above £8bn ($10.4bn) to fund a push into mainland Europe. .... This hits different for me. In the UK. A Monzo customer. Having just met the CEO of Nubank last week. Monzo has struggled with leadership changes and feature velocity. CEO TS Anil stepped down after a boardroom row last year, and ex-Google exec Diana Layfield took over in February. .... Revolut, meanwhile, has 70m customers, a reported $115bn valuation and a full UK banking licence since March. Monzo launched in the US in 2019 and has yet to establish a second market. .... What it does have is UK and EU banking licences, 15.2m customers, £25.7bn of deposits and deep integrations that would take years to build. It makes a sensible acquisition target. .... I find the strategy of this fascinating... Monzo barely uses its balance sheet to lend. It held £2.3bn of loans against £25.7bn of deposits at its March year-end, so it lends out less than 10p of every £1. Monzo would need much more capital to lend at scale. It still uses standardised risk weights, which make each loan more expensive to hold. .... Nubank is the master of lending. It has a $39.4bn credit portfolio against $45.3bn of deposits, so it lends out about 87 cents of every dollar. It could turn Monzo into something very different, with the capital and credit models to lend out far more of that £25.7bn. ... Nubank also won conditional approval for a US bank charter in January. Monzo would add the UK and EU, right on Revolut's home turf. It's about to get spicy between the big two. .... Remember, these are early talks and Monzo declined to comment. It might never happen. UK credit also pays thinner margins than Nubank's home markets, where its net interest margin is 22.9%. ... Still. 🍿. If Nu comes to Europe. European franchises have another thing to worry about besides Revolut.

Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci removing her chador during her tense 1979 interview with Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in Qom, Iran... In October 1979, Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci traveled to Qom, Iran, to interview the Islamic Revolution's supreme leader. To get inside the room, Fallaci was forced to cover herself from head to toe in a heavy black chador, leaving only her face visible. The conversation inside the room was tense from the very start. Fallaci did not hold back her questions. She pushed the Ayatollah on political executions, the sudden shutdown of independent newspapers, and the sharp loss of rights for Iranian women under the new regime. When she asked about the forced wearing of the veil, Khomeini dismissed her concerns and claimed the garment was meant to protect young and respectable women. He then added, "If you do not like the Islamic dress, you are not obliged to wear it." Fallaci took his words literally and replied, "Thank you, Mr. Imam. Since you tell me so, I am taking it off right now." With a quick move, she pulled the chador off her head, leaving her hair completely exposed right in front of the Supreme Leader. Khomeini was furious. He stood up without saying another word and walked out of the room. The room fell silent, and the interview was abruptly stopped. However, Fallaci refused to leave Iran until he returned a day later to finish the conversation. This confrontation became legendary in the history of journalism. It showed a reporter refusing to bow down to authority, even in one of the most dangerous settings imaginable. Fallaci proved that real journalism requires standing up to power, asking hard questions, and refusing to be silenced by fear or tradition. When journalists trade raw courage for easy access and comfortable silence, we lose one of our strongest shields against tyranny. In an era where true courage in reporting feels rare, her brave stand reminds us that honest journalism still has the power to light up the dark, giving a voice to the voiceless and inspiring future generations to speak truth without fear. #archaeohistories
