I’ve been reading Valmiki Ramayana from past couple of days and the Khara-Dushana vadh hits differently once you go beyond the TV version. In Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana, the battle is softened with the Mohini astra. Rama creates an illusion so the 14,000 rakshasas start attacking each other and see multiple Ramas. In Valmiki’s Aranya Kanda, there is no such illusion. Rama, alone and on foot, annihilates the entire force of 14,000 in roughly three hours. The descriptions are raw and brutal : arrows severing arms, piercing chests, cutting charioteers and horses, destroying chariots, and leaving the battlefield soaked in blood and mud. One mortal warrior on foot wiped out an entire army of shape-shifting rakshasas through pure skill, speed, and ferocity. Boomers once opposed the Japanese anime Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama. they objected to a foreign production and the idea of animating sacred figures, calling it disrespectful. The film faced bans and limited release. If a contemporary director attempts a genuinely realistic, Valmiki-aligned adaptation that shows Rama’s actual intensity, grief, and martial ferocity instead of the soft, always-smiling ideal, those same boomers will likely be the first to protest.
