Diversifying defence suppliers builds strategic autonomy. But, how do we make a "gado-gado" fleet work together? Curie Maharani Savitri, Lecturer at Binus University and Coordinator of D-techs Lab, breaks down why fixing Indonesia's military interoperability requires breaking down institutional silos and aligning future budgets. #SemarSentinel #WarningOrder #StrategicAutonomy #MaritimeStrategy #Indonesia

In the op-ed titled "Indonesia’s Navy Is Growing. Is Its Combat Power Keeping Up?", Bianca Febriola examines how Indonesia’s expanding naval fleet translates into operational capabilities. Drawing on the acquisition of PPA combatants and the development of the Merah Putih frigates and Scorpène Evolved submarines, the article explores the importance of aligning platform modernization with weapons integration, procurement continuity, and operational readiness. It also considers the broader requirements of Indonesia’s emerging carrier operations, including interoperability and sustained logistical support. Ultimately, the article underscores that naval strength depends not only on fleet size and tonnage, but also on the ability to operate and sustain an integrated naval force. M. Hamonangan (@maboklemaibon) lastly added that Indonesia’s current doctrine emphasises strengthening naval bases as a means of deterrence, including through the deployment of systems such as BrahMos missiles. This raises the question of whether additional surface combatants are always necessary. What matters, however, is addressing the ageing fleet: of the 6 Van Speijk-class frigates, only 2 to 3 remain operationally viable, while the Parchim-class corvettes are due for replacement but remain in service due to capability shortages. In this context, the Frigate Merah Putih (FMP) programme remains an important consideration in strengthening Indonesia’s naval combat capabilities. #SemarSentinelXSpace #TNIAL #Indonesia #ASEAN
