On this day in 1934, King Alexander I of Yugoslavia was assassinated in Marseille. Serbia emerged victorious from WWI, while Croatia had been part of the defeated Austro-Hungarian Empire. Yet instead of simply expanding the Kingdom of Serbia, a new kingdom was formed that included Croatia. Croatian Ustaše leaders and Bulgarian revolutionary Vlado Chernozemski, a member of the IMRO, were involved in the plot that led to the king's assassination. After WWII, Croatia once again became part of Yugoslavia alongside Serbia, only for the country to break apart decades later. Serbs paid dearly for this failed union.

🚨🇷🇸 Serbian President Vučić at the 🇺🇳 UN General Assembly: "The most difficult thing for us in Serbia is seeing the resurgence of Nazism elevated to social prominence, especially in Croatia 🇭🇷 which is proud of its Nazi past and the use of Nazi slogans and symbols today". I want to remind that in Jasenovac, over four years, more than 500,000 Serbs were killed, including women and children. Jasenovac was the largest Ustaše death camp in the Independent State of Croatia (1941–1945), where Serbs, Jews and Roma were systematically murdered with extreme brutality.
