After caring for this patient, washing her hair, and styling it into a ponytail braid, I played her favorite music collection. We did the same routine for my 3 shifts with her. On my last shift, I said my goodbye. It was hard because somehow I had gotten used to her non-verbal cues (while intubated), which she used to express her needs.
She held my hand with tears in her eyes and mumbled the two words- "Thank you." As she squeezed my hand, I told her she didn't have to struggle to mouth more words. I could feel her deep gratitude. These are the moments that remind me of why I still practice bedside nursing. For me, being able to care for people in their most vulnerable state is a blessing.
I love nursing.

As I pulled my resident aside after a tough day doing regional anesthesia, I asked the same first question I always ask when I have clinical competency concerns,
“How are things at home?”
Most of the time the answer is “fine.”
This time the answer was “I have cancer.”

2/3 She doesn’t have a history of litterbox trouble & was just nervous and confused about her new surroundings. Instead of giving her time to adjust and helping her out by reducing her initial space so she was less overwhelmed, they gave her back. She’s a good girl & so sweet.
