Our paper is now published in @NatMentHealth.
What began as curiosity in med school became a field I later named: metabolic psychiatry. 15+ years later, it's defining a new category of care.
@LabsMetabolism is translating this into patient care.

Thank you Dyane for sharing your story - it is a great example of how your efforts on improving metabolic health can have a significant impact on mental health. Her approach to utilizing a ketogenic vegan diet is creative, but also incredibly effective at bringing about life change. Metabolic Psychiatry Labs looks at each person's individualized health goals and tailors therapies to address patient needs.
I recently had the opportunity to join @NPR’s Short Wave podcast to explain why the research area of metabolic psychiatry is relevant for our field.
We are learning more about the relationship between metabolism and the brain, including how the brain produces and uses energy and how metabolic dysfunction may intersect with psychiatric illness.
Promising findings like these need to be followed by rigorous science and researchers globally are pouring development into just that.
I’m grateful to NPR and Emily Kwong for the opportunity to discuss this emerging field and the research my colleagues and I have been working to advance.
We spearheaded this initial work at Stanford Medicine and are now conducting larger trials.

I’m grateful to join the American Psychiatric Association (APA) @Pres_APA President Dr. Mark Rapaport and researcher Dr. Mahavir Agarwal this evening in a live webinar to discuss the subfield of metabolic psychiatry and why it is relevant today.
The webinar runs today, Thursday, August 20, at 7 PM ET.
The discussion will be centered around the state of the science, looking beyond traditional approaches in augmenting care through metabolic-focused interventions and what clinical implications are relevant in psychiatric practice along with practical ways to incorporate metabolic considerations into psychiatric assessment.
The webinar will be recorded but will only be available to APA members after the live broadcast, so be sure to register now and join us soon!

💡 The first RCT of ketogenic therapy for schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder was just published, marking an important step for metabolic psychiatry.
Participants adhered with structured support, and the results point toward larger studies on symptoms, cognition, and metabolic health.
amazing person Dr. Jong Rho - so intelligent and humble. we will miss him. I feel fortunate I was able to meet him a few times. #metabolicpsychiatry #neuroketo
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Jong Rho, whose work helped shape the field of ketogenic metabolic therapy and influenced so many within it.
In this clip, @DominicDAgosti2 shares how Jong’s encouragement helped change the trajectory of his own career.
Rest in peace, Jong. Your impact will endure for generations.

β-hydroxybutyrate: A Renoprotective Hormone In Polycystic Kidney Disease
--> New review article just published

Proud to share a study lead by PI Judy Ford which I was a co-investigator at @UCSF on: the first randomized controlled trial of ketogenic therapy in schizophrenia-spectrum and bipolar disorders, out now in Schizophrenia Bulletin.
Key results: keto was feasible, metabolic markers improved significantly at 1 month, and the 4-month extension showed significant psychiatric symptom reduction and better cognition.
58 participants at UCSF. 1-month RCT + optional 4-month keto extension.
Early evidence — but a real step toward metabolic treatments for serious mental illness.

Honored to give an endowed lecture at WashU on metabolic psychiatry—sharing clinical applications and its growing role in modern care. Fittingly, Gerty Cori (Cori Cycle), the first American woman Nobel laureate, advanced metabolism here.

STAT recently covered metabolic psychiatry.
A core point: metabolic health is almost never evaluated in psychiatric care.
When the brain consumes 20% of the body's energy, that's a gap we can't keep ignoring.

Today, CMS issued a memo to every hospital telling them to stop serving sugary drinks + inflammatory processed food to patients or risk federal reimbursement.
Bold, common sense action that will save lives.
We are anxiously awaiting how the media spins this negatively.

Baszucki Group is hosting a workshop at #SIRS2026 highlighting emerging metabolic psychiatry approaches for schizophrenia. We’ll share insights from recent pilot trials, discuss real-world implementation, and hear from a lived experience perspective energized by new hope for treatment options.
Join our panelists @ShebaniMD @ErinLBellamy @ProfDeannaK, Wednesday, March 25 at 3:30 CET in Room Verde!
The science behind @LabMetabolism (MPL) is in NYT today.
Our research on treating mental illness through keto is one tool in metabolic psychiatry. MPL exists to bring this science to patients who need it most.

.@SecKennedy on the GRAS loophole in the United States: “In Europe there’s only 400 legal ingredients. This agency [HHS] does not know how many ingredients there are in American food. The estimates are between 4,000 and 10,000.”
