When I was in teacher's college, we were taught *not* to teach like this, that it was too old-fashioned and teacher-centred and didn't allow for enough student inquiry. The pendulum has now swung back in most places, thank goodness, and many kids are now getting this kind of high-quality phonics instruction, but we did a whole lot of harm for decades by listening to the people we called experts back then, apparently without good reason.
As an adult, I want to attend this school so badly.

The term “oracy” won’t float everyone’s boat, but there’s no doubt that oral language abilities need to be developed (a) in their own right and (b) to support reading and writing skills across the curriculum and across year levels. Oral language is not “set and forget”. I’ve written about this in a number of open access publications, including this one: scholar.google.com/scholar?h…

In the right hands, this could be good. The embedded videos of key scenes will be a powerful thing for many students who struggle with this. Reading a whole play line by line as if it's a novel, turns many kids off Shakespeare. Close reading of key passages is vital but ensuring kids have a rich knowledge of the contextual factors/vocab/plot around "Is this a dagger I see...." for example is crucial.
Computer can enrich public-domain stories like Shakespeare's plays with illustrations, embedded videos, archival photos, historical context from web sources, and modern translations. Read the enriched story: read-macbeth.pplx.app

all rather predictable? 😇
Minimally guided instruction doesn't work with AI tutors either. One thing we are finding out is that Socratic questioning models are very frustrating for students when they withhold the explicit guidance novice learners actually need. arxiv.org/abs/2609.29995

A more nuanced and informed take from someone knowledgeable within edtech (me): xanderathienitis.substack.co…
Exclusive from @benclatworthy Screen time in classrooms should be slashed as there are fears it is fuelling a “crisis” in pupils’ speech and language development, ministers have been urged Leading clinicians have written to Lucy Powell, the education secretary, to warn that they are witnessing a “crisis unfold with children presenting earlier and more severely” with physical and developmental health issues, including language and eyesight problems The letter, which was also sent to Yvette Cooper, the health secretary, was signed by 150 clinicians inlcuding Dr Louise Milne, consultant paediatrician at Portsmouth Hospitals University Trust, and Dr Sanjiv Nichani, a senior consultant paediatrician and co-founder of the Children’s Intensive Care Unit at Leicester Children’s Hospital Experts said the use of tablets, laptops, interactive whiteboards and headphones “exploded” during the pandemic and has “never been rolled back”. Recent research found that many pupils now spend longer on screens in the classroom than they are recommended to spend across an entire day. They warn: “A generation is being taught on devices and platforms that have never been subject to systematic, child‑focused testing for their cumulative impact on children’s eyes, ears or speech, and we are the clinicians who will spend the rest of our careers treating the consequences.” thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

This is the consequence of whole language and balanced literacy. Give the people systematic phonics and spelling instruction!

Wowzers! 🥶
💡A survey of Australian teachers found 88% believe in the learning styles myth, 38% believe students learn better through discovery than explicit instruction, 41% believe testing tends to detract from learning. If you're taught neuromyths about learning from someone who is supposed to be an expert, you'll likely believe them. The report rightly recommends strengthening initial teacher education, among other things. cis.org.au/publication/knowl…

Is this what Hardy was referring to when he wrote of Wildeve in The Return of the Native: "The grace of his movement was singular—it was the pantomimic expression of a lady-killing career."?

Back in May, I wrote a blogpost titled "Cognitive load theory meets trauma-informed practice". This seemed to resonate with a lot of teachers and I've now presented the idea at a couple of conferences/PL events. This has given me cause for extra reflection on the fact that there's students with overlapping but not necessarily identified needs in all classrooms. We do them no favours by assuming their needs stop at feeling calm and safe. They also need to be *learning*. I've termed these students SWANs - Students With Additional Needs and have updated the post accordingly. pamelasnow.blogspot.com/2026…

There exists a martyrdom of those who offer their lives in a single moment, and the more hidden martyrdom of those who give their lives day after day. This is exactly what all Christians are called to do: to give our lives with love, every day.

As a primary school teacher I am imploring parents to actually have conversations with your kids from an early age. They'll be less frustrated if they can actually articulate what they want and need, and teachers lives would be a bit easier.
