building a video game is mostly saying “that should be easy” right before discovering a completely new category of suffering 👍

i recently judged a generative ai game jam at my day job and it reinforced something i’ve been thinking about through my work in tech and game development. faster development definitely increases the signal to noise problem. i even saw games that were nearly identical in concept and execution but the games that were good were genuinely incredible, especially considering how little time people had to make them. when technical barriers start disappearing, the differences in people’s imagination, taste and ability to execute become much more apparent. that’s what i find to be super cool about ai assisted development. the technology is still imperfect but we’re getting to see what happens when the distance between having an idea and bringing it to life becomes dramatically shorter. lowering the barrier to creation doesn’t automatically make everyone equally creative. it makes exceptional creativity easier to recognize.

thought we would've been past this by now the least someone could do is: - not start sentences with And or But - remove the - between words - remove the emdash - remove the excessive use of the oxford comma when writing in a conversational tone - correct repeated narratives that AI uses yikers man

wishlist my dumb space game unfortunately finishing any feature means that I have to spend 3-5 hours to play, stage, record and edit all the videos by myself for it instead of helping make the game

You’d be shocked if you knew how many people work in the gaming industry and don’t play games.

players don't care how difficult a feature was to build this is both deeply unfair and probably good game design

I think one of the most important things you can do for yourself is find mentors. I don’t mean one official person you meet with every week for years. A mentor can be anyone. Someone older than you. Someone your age. Someone you only knew for a few months. Someone you met three times. Someone whose work you study from a distance. Someone who died 200 years ago but still changes the way you think. You can have several mentors at once, and they can all teach you completely different things. Some of the best mentors I’ve had were only in my life briefly. A few months. A handful of conversations. Sometimes that was all it took. We get too attached to the idea that mentorship has to be permanent to be meaningful. It doesn’t. Sometimes you meet someone exactly when you’re ready to understand what they have to teach you and eventually you outgrow the lesson, the relationship changes or life moves both of you somewhere else. That doesn’t make it less valuable. “The teacher appears when the student is ready” makes more sense to me the older I get because learning is really a cycle of meeting, absorbing, growing, letting go and becoming ready for the next teacher. You have to keep moving. Keep learning. Keep becoming a beginner again. Mentorship also teaches you more than whatever skill originally brought you together. It teaches you how to let people go without diminishing what they meant to you, how to be grateful without needing something to last forever and how to recognize that people can play an important role in your life without being meant to stay in it. I think that creates a deeper kind of compassion and eventually something else happens too. You realize that while you were busy learning from all of these people, someone else started learning from you. You become the person answering the question, giving the advice, making the introduction or helping someone through something you once struggled to understand yourself. Sometimes you won’t even realize you were their mentor until much later. That’s the part I love most. You learn from someone, carry a piece of what they taught you forward and eventually pass something of your own to somebody else. The roles keep changing. Student becomes teacher. Teacher becomes student again. The cycle continues.
