We had a server drop a porcelain bowl of soup on our table in Shanghai. Shards of pottery were in all the other dishes. Nothing was replaced. Didn’t get to eat lunch that day.

My dad would try to do that. But I’d vote first thing in the morning so he was always too late.

My Muslim neighbors never proselytized. Even when I was interested enough in going to the masjid with them & hearing visiting imams. They were hopeful, but never put the slightest pressure on me.

My Yma had a VERY rough start as a kitten and maintains a strong distrust of humans in general. You have to EARN her friendship. Yet she trusts me completely and I can pick her up safely even when she’s scared.

Unfortunately, not everyone passes out from pain. I was SO disappointed to discover that. Also they had to keep me talking (and were afraid to give me anything at all for pain) because it took over an hour to assemble all the surgeons needed.

Doc: “A 10 is if you got run over by a truck.”
Me: “l WAS run over by a truck.”
Doc: “Great! So you know what a 10 is!”
Me: “Yeah, *I* know what a 10 is. *You* on the other hand have absolutely no concept of it.”

I survived a catastrophic accident. I can’t use the 1-10 chart as written because they have zero concept how much pain is possible. If 10 is the most pain I can imagine having a badly fractured pelvis barely scores. Trigeminal nerve pain is like a 2.

Yeah - we recognize the pattern of racism pretty damn quick. You are part of the problem.

My former Muslim neighbors are the most inspiring family I’ve ever met. They make me want to be the best citizen I can be just from their example. (And they threw great parties with fabulous food.) Also I’d be lost without my hard working immigrant hubby.

Right? When I saw a whole pride of lions go into the tall grass and the grass NEVER MOVED AT ALL I refused to leave the Range Rover even for comfort stops.
And not one safari on that whole continent is gonna let you out of the vehicle with animals present.

What the hell kind of safari is she on where you can get close enough to a giraffe to get peed on? They don’t let you out of the vehicles if there are animals around. Unless she went to a “safari” park. But that’s not the same at all. Also it’s hilarious.

Snorkeling is my happy place. Pity I can only tolerate air temperatures in the subarctic.

I got to see sperm whales in Kaikoura, NZ, where the sea floor drops steeply off the beach and you can see deep water critters closer to shore. (Also got to see albatrosses.)

We went once, in Hawaii. We did not have cheesecake. We split an entree and a salad AND a dessert and weren’t hungry for dinner later. So. Much. Food.
