Does anyone have any recommendations for keeping thread from rubbing against your fingers when you ladder stitch? Maybe it's on me because I'm always nervous about my needle snapping if I pull too much

all I can think is like bandaid on my finger so it's not rubbing, thimbles wouldn't help since I'm not poking myself, just getting rug burn along the side of my finger lol
