🌿 Building on the #SAP2023_2037, LCBC developed a 5-year Regional Biodiversity Action Plan #RBAP2023_2028 to restore ecosystems, protect endangered species, and promote sustainable livelihoods.
With 3 strategic axes and 392+ million USD in planned investments, RBAP is a bold step toward reversing biodiversity loss and empowering communities across the Lake Chad Basin.

Wild scenes in Anegbette, Etsako Central LGA, Edo State, after a local vigilante shot and killed a giant hippopotamus in the Okumuzo River, a tributary of the Alika River.
The hunter is being hailed as a hero by residents — who see the kill as both a rare triumph and a culturally significant moment.
The hippo, however, is classified as endangered wildlife, raising questions over conservation and human-wildlife conflict in the area.
Once common across Nigeria and Africa, hippos have drastically declined due to habitat loss, hunting, and negative human-wildlife interactions. In Nigeria, estimates suggest only about 100 hippos remain.
🦛 Heroic act or environmental loss? What’s your take?

Honey is highly sought after all over Nigeria. Distressingly, around Gashaka Gumti National Park, it is common for people to cut down entire trees to harvest the honey within tree trunks!
Over the last 2 months, ANI Foundation and the National Park Service have engaged the services of the Bee Keeping Extension Society to train 50 farmers in communities living in and around the National Park who have erected 350 bee hives across the landscape.
One key aim of the program is to improve household incomes through the production of honey. But another key aim is to stop the needless felling of trees in the landscape. The bee hives are kept in forested areas incentivising people to keep the trees so their bees have plenty of pollen.
We are improving livelihoods AND giving people a stake in saving the forests of Gashaka Gumti at the same time!

"Elephants are not always easy neighbours. They can destroy crops and hurt or even kill people. And if the people who live close to elephants don't benefit from their conservation, they will unlikely support us, and our efforts hitherto will have been in vain.
@EPIAfrica brings African governments together with a platform to project their concerns and raise finance. It empowers wildlife officials across the continent and connects them with leading conservationists," says @sharon_ikeazor, the chair of the EPI Leadership Council in the preface to our 10-year report.
