How do you reach someone you love when politics has turned your relationship into an us vs. them battle? After 50 years of helping people communicate with loved ones involved in cults, I’ve learned that the first step is to remember that your loved ones are special! They are not the enemy! When someone becomes caught in an authoritarian mindset, arguing harder, throwing facts at them, calling names, or expressing anger and frustration can push them further away. You may believe their thinking has been influenced, while they may believe yours has been. But brainwashing is not 100%. The person's real self is still there, and reconnecting with that person begins with your relationship, not a political argument. Show respect, express appreciation, listen actively, and resist the urge to win. One of the most powerful tools you have is to ask a respectful question, patiently listen to the answer, and ask a thoughtful follow-up. People can begin to question their own beliefs when they feel safe enough to think for themselves. But that takes patience, warmth, and a willingness to reconnect through the values you still share. If you want to reach someone you love before the midterms or beyond, try shifting your goal from winning the argument to rebuilding the connection.
