The Houston, Texas model of growth being promoted for Dublin, Ireland.
My column this week is about a second motorway around Dublin. There are 5,000+ housing planning permissions per year from just 4 counties - Fingal, Meath, Kildare and Wicklow. Building such a volume of housing without enough roads will only mean more commuter hell.

You’d wonder what the actual rationale behind this is. Somehow FF-FG are intent on doing the opposite of good practice as already implemented pretty much everywhere these days.

Dublin needs more public transport, tram lines, and an extensive metro, not more motorways to choke the life out of it.

I’ll say it again for the record. The ring road is not about traffic. It’s about opening up lands for developers. The existing traffic woes is due to poor planning. Councillors have a lot to answer here and the finger should be pointed at them.

Can anyone point to a single example where a bigger road fixed traffic congestion in a city? The M50 didn't do it in Dublin. Thhe M25 didn't do it in London. Bordeaux's bypass motorway is a nightmare.
The quincentennial bridge was supposed to be a game changer, so was the M50 etc. etc. All are now gridlocked.

If the Minister were to answer the question, he would have to admit that successive governments’ housing policies have failed the average Joe in favour of developers.
