A hotel front desk manager who’s checked in over 50,000 guests in 9 years told me most travelers pay for a hotel room and use about half of what comes with it.
They pay $40 for late checkout when a 20-second call would have gotten it free. They buy a $30 phone charger at the airport while the front desk has a drawer of them to lend. They pay for toothpaste at the gift shop when there’s a free closet of it behind the desk. They take the worst room on the floor, next to the elevator and the ice machine, because they never asked one question at check-in.
“The hotel doesn’t hide these things. We just don’t offer them unless you ask. Most guests never ask.”

A man pays $120 a month for Starlink at his lake cabin.
He's there four months a year. June, July, August, and a few weekends in September. The other eight months, the dish sits on the roof collecting snow, drawing power, and billing his card on the first of every month. $1,440 a year. Roughly $960 of it paid for internet nobody was using.
He never noticed. The charge was small enough to hide in the noise of his other bills. He signed up in 2022, entered his card once, and never opened the billing page again.
Then one night at a fire pit, his buddy, a former Starlink support rep who has fielded thousands of these calls, asked him a simple question: "What plan are you on?"
He didn't know. He couldn't tell you the name of the plan, the price he was supposed to be paying, or whether a cheaper option existed for his exact situation.
His buddy shook his head. "You're not paying for internet. You're paying for a dish that sits in the dark for eight months. And you've done it for years."
What he showed him over the next 25 minutes saved him hundreds of dollars and changed how he thinks about every subscription he owns.
