What makes it worse is shock cavalry are generally heavy! Armor, lances/spears, shields! So they can take the force from a frontal charge and have a much larger impact. These guys are very much light cavalry, primarily used to flank side and back lines, or take down disorganised or retreating troops. The entire siege was a cluster fuck over all, this start to it was very much an indicator of what to expect going forward.
