Another huge endeavour just landed on niri-git: release binds and modifier-only binds! You can open the overview with Super by itself, or bind push-to-talk. I combined press and release config: if press runs, release is guaranteed to run. So push-to-talk never gets stuck! #niri

So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

The only 2 explanations for what's happening in AI. 1. They're afraid of open weight models 2. They've hit a wall. They all the see the same thing. There's no way in hell they are seeing ASI. They still ship Electron apps. If they were close to ASI then they could cure cancer

Let me do one serious post chat, and I'll resume shitposting. This is important to make explicitly clear. Two weeks ago, fellow Dane, David Heinemeier Hansson (@dhh) went on a public tirade about Nix and the Linux ecosystem. "Goddamn maniacs." "Clowns." "Goblins." "Cancer." In the same conversation, he called Nix “amazing technology.” Two days ago, it became clear that he is planning to build his "distribution" on NixOS. That is worth dwelling on. NixOS can be criticized. Of course it can. We criticize ourselves constantly. What I find deeply gross is arriving as a tourist to an ecosystem, using an enormous platform to ridicule the people who built it, then deciding their work is good enough to become the foundation of your own project. Much of his indictment is not even about NixOS. Land acknowledgements? That is not some defining debate here. It is Twitter culture-war material imported into a caricature of a community he barely knows. For someone so insistent that technology should be "apolitical", David spends a lot of time talking about politics, culture, codes of conduct, and community governance. He rails against codes of conduct, then writes rules for how people in his own community should behave while insisting that somehow does not count. Call it whatever you want. Communities require governance. And governance, packaging, security, infrastructure, release engineering, review and maintenance are not distractions from building a distribution. They are the work. So far, what he has is a configuration and installer layer on top of years of work by Arch, Linux, Rust, and soon NixOS and Nixpkgs contributors. Using Claude to produce that glue does not make the work underneath disappear. Packages, infrastructure, security and technical knowledge exist because people did the difficult, boring work required to make this ecosystem function. You are not replacing those people. You are depending on them. Which makes the rhetoric about creating a home for the "competent" people obnoxious. David, the competent people are already here. They are the people your project depends on — including people and communities you have been calling clowns. You do not get to praise the "amazing technology", dismiss the people who sustain it as politically deranged, put a layer on top, and cast yourself as the serious technical adult in the room. That is not escaping dysfunction. It is standing on other people's work while sneering downward. People mock NixOS. They declare it insane. They explain why nobody should want it. And then they use it anyway. So who's competent here? You can hate us. You can mock us. You can call us clowns. But when the answer to your own technical problems is to build on our work, that tells its own story. So, David: welcome to NixOS. But understand what you are standing on. If you intend to build on years of work from this community, the attitude adjustment is overdue: less culture-war posturing, more respect and humility toward the people doing the work you now depend on.

I noticed an employee’s Teams status said “Busy” for three hours yesterday. Three hours. Busy doing what? So I messaged him. “Hey! What are you working on?” No response. Busy. Convenient. I checked his calendar. No meetings. Interesting. So I walked past his desk. He was typing. I asked what he was doing. “Working.” Now he’s being evasive. I immediately scheduled a Productivity Transparency Meeting. During the meeting, he explained that he sometimes sets his status to Busy so people won’t interrupt him while he concentrates. I’m sorry. Won’t interrupt you? At work? That’s literally where the interruptions live. So I updated our Teams policy. Employees can no longer choose their own status. HR assigns them. Available. Busy. Away. Emotionally Unavailable. Under Observation. One employee asked what “Under Observation” means. I changed his status to Under Observation. He understands now.

An employee resigned yesterday. Voluntarily. Which I found extremely aggressive. He gave two weeks’ notice. I gave him a calendar invite. “Exit Interview — 15 Minutes.” He arrived carrying coffee. Confident. Too confident. I asked why he was leaving. “Better opportunity.” I nodded. “Better how?” More money. “Define more.” $20,000. I wrote: “Motivated by financial gain.” Then I asked what the new company offered that we didn’t. Remote work. Higher salary. Four weeks vacation. Annual bonuses. He just kept confessing. Eventually I stopped him. “This isn’t looking great for you.” He reminded me that he was already quitting. Exactly the kind of defeatist attitude we had been documenting. So I presented our counteroffer. Same salary. Same job. But we would let him pick one snack for the break room. He declined. Unbelievable. So we moved to offboarding. Laptop. Badge. Keys. Parking pass. Company mug. He said he bought the mug himself. Don't care. Then I asked him to return any intellectual property developed during his employment. He asked what that meant. I pointed at his head. Legal stopped the meeting shortly after that. His last day is Friday. We’re still negotiating custody of several memories.
