I am a big fan of Roberto Clemente & when I bought a lot of 1973 SI magazines, it hit me: I have never looked for the SI tribute to Roberto's death. So I was excited to search through the magazines only to get disappointed and frustrated 🧵

This is cool. I was reviewing my newly purchased 1st issue of SI & this yellow slip fell. The form states it was purchased on the day of release Aug 16 1954, there was a line to purchase, this was the 46th copy sold 1/2 🧵 @tohardtoocall @CGC_SI @MagazineCurator @SportsMags

The form # indicates the magazine was purchased in the United Nations Secretariat lobby. By the tone, I assume it was a female trying to impress Sandy a 'Sportsman'. The seller was unaware of the form. In all the years he owned, he never thoroughly looked through the magazine.

Picked up this August 1939 Baseball Magazine. I believe this is the only magazine cover, issued in 1939, that captures Lou Gehrig on the day he stopped playing May 2 1939. @THACardStory @baseballinpix @tohardtoocall

This is called Pistons and Knicks vs Bulls in the 90s. They invented nothing.

As I hunt for vintage sports magazines, I come across some interesting publications. I picked up this May 1937 French magazine with the Hindenburg disaster on the cover. I believe this is the only magazine that showcased the disaster on the front cover. 1/4 🧵

Devon White stole second, third and home in the same inning on September 9, 1989 for the Angels. One inning, three steals, the entire trip around the bases without needing another hit. Only a handful of major leaguers have ever pulled that off. It's basically a full offensive sequence created by one runner's speed.

We are saddened by the passing of 15-year Major League veteran and 6-time All-Star Sam McDowell. Nicknamed “Sudden Sam”, McDowell spent his first 11 seasons with Cleveland from 1961-71. The 6’5” lefty led the league in strikeouts five times, including 1965 when he racked up a career-high 325 Ks to go along with a league-leading 2.18 ERA. In 1970, McDowell won a career-high 20 games and struck out 304 batters in a career-high 305 innings and finished third in Cy Young Award voting. A Pittsburgh native, McDowell finished his career with the Pirates in 1975 after stints with the Giants and Yankees. His career totals included 141 wins and 2,453 strikeouts. During his post-playing career, McDowell worked as a Mental Health and Addiction Recovery Consultant and served on the Board of Directors for the Baseball Assistance Team (B.A.T). He was 84 years old.

I don’t want to hear about how good any running back today is until he bulldozes an All-Pro linebacker like he’s a third-grader and then leaves the field without his jersey because the defense had to rip it off his back just to slow him down.
