For a Ugandan trader who imports from China or Dubai, a rising Dollar hits you from 4 sides. 1. Your Capital Shrinks Instantly You buy goods in Dollars. If you had UGX 10M and the Dollar was at 3,700, you had $2,702 to order. If it goes to 3,900, that same 10M only gives you $2,564. You are forced to order less stock with the same money. 2. Double Loss on Prices Your suppliers in China still want the same $2,000 for your bale of clothes. But because the Dollar is high, you pay more in Shillings to get those Dollars. You must then increase your selling price in Uganda, but your customers in Owino or Kikuubo still have the same small salary. So sales drop. 3. URA Taxes Go Up URA customs duty is calculated on the Dollar value of goods (CIF).
