Hoping to learn about the world. Older buildings in particular intrigue me.

A single sculptor built an entire medieval castle out of CLAY deep in the forests of Switzerland. The level of detail on the towers and bridges is insane 🤯:

There's something magical about public clock towers. The Tour de l’Horloge has been ticking in Paris, France since 1370.

I've always said resistance fighters rather than Hamas. Abubaker makes a really good point.
Replying to @mrrembrandmrs
Armed resistance fighters are not Hamas. Hamas is mainly a government and political wing. There are several armed resistance groups in Gaza. The conflation between Hamas and armed resistance groups has put a target on the back of every public servant and helps Israel continue that.

I can't believe this was made with a paintbrush. Just look at that level of detail. Jenaro Pérez Villaamil, "View of the Interior of a Cathedral" (around 1850).

I want to talk about @HabibaM38738107 for a minute. She is only 25 years old. She has two babies, a toddler who is almost three and an infant, and she is trying to keep them alive in Gaza with almost nothing. chuffed.org/project/habiba06 Her toddler is now unable to walk because malnutrition has weakened his body and deteriorated his bones. I keep thinking about that. A child who should be running around, climbing on things, getting into everything, being an annoying little almost-three-year-old, and instead his body has become so depleted that he cannot walk. And Habiba cannot simply go buy him what he needs. She cannot fill a shopping cart with milk, eggs, meat, fruit, vegetables, formula, and all of the nutrient-dense foods that growing children desperately need. Whatever food she can get is often whatever is available, whatever scraps can be found, whatever a kitchen might be able to give them. Her campaign has received $50 in the last 30 days. Fifty dollars. For a mother with two very small children trying to survive this. And this isn't only about babies being hungry. These are incredibly important years of development. Their bodies are building bones, teeth, muscles, organs, and brains. Severe malnutrition during childhood can interfere with growth and development and can leave lasting damage. These children need nutrition now. Not six months from now. Not when the world finally decides Gaza has suffered enough. Now. Habiba is 25. She has barely begun adulthood herself, and instead of figuring out normal young-adult things, she is trying to figure out how to raise two babies through a genocide. Her husband cannot work, and even saying that feels absurd when so much of Gaza has been destroyed and normal jobs and normal life have been ripped away. I want us to help her raise at least $200. That's it. Enough to help her get diapers, formula, and some nutritious food for her babies. It is nowhere near everything this family needs. It is the bare minimum. I know there are thousands of campaigns. I know everyone is tired. I know people feel overwhelmed because there are so many Palestinians asking for help and no individual person can save everyone. But maybe we don't have to think about everyone for a minute. Maybe we just help this mother. These two babies. This one family. If enough of us give $5, $10, $20, or simply share Habiba's campaign outside of Substack, we can get her to $200. We can help put nutritious food into those little bodies. We can help give her toddler a chance to regain his strength. We can give this young mother a little breathing room when she has been asked to carry something no 25-year-old should ever have to carry. Please help me help Habiba and her babies. I want to see that little boy walking again. ❤️🇵🇸

My goal is to remind people that civilization was built by those who refused to make the world ugly. St Conan’s Kirk captures that mission perfectly. A small village in Scotland could have settled for plain stone, cheap function, and forgettable walls. Instead, someone gave it arches, towers, carvings, memory, and wonder. That is my vision. To find the places, paintings, buildings, books, and stories that prove beauty was once treated as a duty. To show that culture grows when people build beyond their own lifespan. To remind us that the world becomes smaller when we stop expecting greatness from ordinary places. St Conan’s Kirk stands in a remote corner of Scotland, but it carries the ambition of a civilization. That is the kind of world worth preserving.
