Solidariteit is op uitnodiging in die VSA en tree in vir bedrywe soos landbou en mynbou, en vir sowat 250 000 Suid-Afrikaners wie se werk van Agoa afhang. 𝗠𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗔 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 | Solidarity heads to White House in final bid to save AGOA On Thursday, Solidarity will make a final attempt at the White House in Washington to safeguard South Africa’s participation in the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) for 2027, following growing indications in recent weeks that the country could be excluded from the agreement. Solidarity is set to hold urgent discussions with the Trump administration at the White House regarding this matter. This takes place against the backdrop of a deepening diplomatic crisis between South Africa and the United States. Jaco Kleynhans, head of public liaison at Solidarity, will meet with senior officials at the White House on Thursday, 29 October. The discussions will cover the review process for AGOA eligibility conducted over the past few months, as well as the implications of South Africa’s continued participation – or its termination. For months, Solidarity has been arguing to the American side that ending South Africa’s participation in AGOA would not be the most appropriate way to express dissatisfaction with how South Africa has handled the current diplomatic dispute. According to Derek Mans, sector coordinator for the aviation sector at Solidarity, employees cannot repeatedly be the ones to pay the price for the airline’s financial and management problems. 𝗠𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗔 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 | Solidarity warns against nationalisation of privately held unclaimed pension funds Solidarity warns against the state centralising privately held unclaimed pension funds and other financial assets. In August 2026, the National Treasury published a draft framework for the centralisation of unclaimed financial assets, initially focusing on retirement funds. These assets are estimated to total more than R88 billion. During the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that the government was continuing technical work to establish the institutional, legal and operational framework for the centralisation process. According to Marius Croucamp, Deputy General Secretary for Strategy at Solidarity, this centralisation amounts to the nationalisation of privately held financial assets. 𝗲𝗡𝗖𝗔 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 The Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) has dismissed eNCA’s application for leave to appeal against both its finding and sanction. The news channel must now broadcast the prescribed correction and apology to Solidarity, unless it appeals again. The case stems from a broadcast on 25 March 2026 in which eNCA presenters claimed that Solidarity had been spreading messages about genocide in the United States. The BCCSA found that the broadcast created an inaccurate and unfair impression of Solidarity’s position. Despite eNCA’s determined attempt to overturn the finding or have the sanction reduced, the original ruling therefore stands. The BCCSA found that eNCA had failed to demonstrate that the tribunal’s decision was clearly wrong. 𝗠𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗔 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 | Budget speech offers no relief from tax burden The medium-term budget speech is a mix of correct, necessary interventions and significant gaps and shortcomings. Solidarity welcomes the relief on fuel prices but urges that this be accompanied by broader interventions to build up reserves, both physical and financial. 𝗠𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗔 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 | MTBPS must put money in people’s pockets, not take it out – Solidarity Solidarity’s Research Institute (SRI) believes tomorrow’s Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) must set a clear course towards lower government spending, tax relief and the removal of policies that constrain growth. South African households and businesses can no longer be expected to foot the bill for an inefficient state and harmful policy choices. According to the SRI, two audits should form the basis of this approach: one to determine which positions in the public service genuinely add value, and a second to assess the impact of policies and legislation on economic growth. 𝗠𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗔 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 | Acknowledgement will not save jobs – Ramaphosa must present an AGOA rescue plan Solidarity calls on President Cyril Ramaphosa to demonstrate leadership and urgently present a concrete plan with clear deadlines in an effort to preserve South Africa’s participation in AGOA. Ramaphosa’s sudden acknowledgement that South Africa could be excluded from the trade programme comes too late and offers no reassurance to workers whose livelihoods are threatened as a result. According to Solidarity, the organisation already has a concrete plan that it has long wanted to share with the government for the benefit of South Africa’s people and workers. However, this offer has been rejected, while Solidarity’s efforts to protect jobs and trade benefits are dismissed as interference and even branded as treason by radical groups. Dit sou vereis dat betrekkinge met die VSA onmiddellik moet herstel. Solidariteit beywer hom jare lank reeds vir die behoud van Agoa-voordele, maar sy pleidooie val gedurig op dowe ore.

Kommentators het heelwat te sê gehad oor Solidariteit se inisiatief om die VF+ en DA te versoek om hul magte te gebruik om ʼn dispuut in die RNE te verklaar. Hierdie versoek spruit uit die regering se swak hantering van buitelandse betrekkinge, veral minister Ronald Lamola se optrede. Solidariteit se druk is van groot belang, aangesien die werk van tot ʼn halfmiljoen Suid-Afrikaners van goeie betrekkinge met die VSA afhanklik is.
