It's our one-year anniversary of SGI. An idea that started with a few cold ones in a kitchen in Waukee, IA to cover small college sports in Iowa has been fun journey. Football snuck up on us so we are few weeks behind on the official one year anniversary 😀
Our core team of JD, Ghost, and J Cole has grown to include Dr. Bowser, Chad Harberts, Warren and Peacock Schrock, Zbo, Brian Dutler and Zac Ceresa.
We are covering Iowa High School Sports (Chad Harberts Show) Missouri Valley College Basketball and Iowa Colleges Dr. Bowser BB shows, Peacock Corner (Upper Iowa D2) and the Pigskin Breakdown Show.
A huge thanks to all the great people and partners we have met on the way @midwestsportstv @PSchiltzMSplus @Quinn_Douglas_ and the hundreds of coaches and administrators who we have interviewed and get to work with.
Thanks to all the behind-the-scenes supporters the Gunderson and Rice Families who have this all volunteer effort the first-year a blast.
Pretty cool to see our friend Pat working the college game. If you live in Sioux City you have heard him call countless football and bb games for @midwestsportstv and he will be doing this Saturdays SC East playoff football game.
@PSchiltzMSplus @blenny10 @ChadHarberts @JordanCole43
Had a chance to join the USC Football Radio Network in Madison for the USC vs Wisconsin game. What a pleasure to assist the legendary Pete Arbogast, the voice of Trojan football for 40 years, alongside three-time Trojan All-american Sean Cody.
Also crossed paths with former Penn State star and NBC broadcaster Todd Blackledge and Heisman winner Gino Torretta of ESPN Radio.
Already looking forward to the next one.
Morningside football is one of the most consistent college football programs in
Iowa and in the US. Another powerhouse season being built in Sioux City this season.
.@MsideFootball amassed 599 total yards in a 61-21 win over Concordia on Saturday. See the highlights and hear from @MsideFball coach Steve Ryan and Victor Atupra.
Basketball is approaching fast and the Doctor is in the house. Dr. Bowsers "Deep in the Valley" show sat down for an in depth preview on the UIC Flames mens and womens programs. Two programs on the rise fast in the @MVCsports and UIC Men were so close to a NCAA March Madness berth in 2026.

Iowa College NAIA, D2, D3, and FCS Scorecard Week 8 sportsguysiowa.com/iowa-coll…
Top Performers of the Week
St. Ambrose A+: The Bees are having an excellent year and now are 4-0 in the conference. Impressive work in Davenport to building a foundation this year and beyond. They put up an impressive 56-20 win over Mt. Mercy.
William Penn A+ coming off a tough game where their mistakes killed them, refocused to say the least. An Angry bunch of Statesmen put up a 70 burger on Clarke.
Wartburg A+ The Knights got down fast at Dubuque and were under alot of pressure on the bluff. Down 14 in a hurry and facing a powerful Spartan offense on the road. The defense rose up in the games of undefeated conference teams and the Knights pulled away to an impressive 33-14 victory with many key 4th down stops.
Coe A+ In our SGI text chain where we follow all the games there were alot of WOW Simpson is taking it to Coe comments. Down 24-7 with three minutes to go in the 3rd quarter the Kohawks put up 21 straight in furious comeback to win 28-24.
Other Top of the Class Performers in Week 8
Central A The Dutch rolled and are starting to flex their muscles with a strong 56-21 home win over Buena Vista.
Northwestern College A The Blood Red Oranges rolled east for the short trip to Forest City and showed why they are one the best NAIA Teams and programs in the country with a 68-10 win.
Grand View A: Consistent Dominance each and every week. Another 41-17 Win. One of the best coached and most efficient teams in the country each and every year.
Morningside A Another of the best NAIA programs in the country this year and every year dominated Concordia 61-21 in another dominant and workmanlike win that you expect from Steve Ryan's Maroon boys. Iowan Max Hough just rolled with 117 on the ground.
Grinnell A Getting to a 5th win in a grind it out affair over Cornell 7-3 is another huge one for Coach Barnes and the Pioneers. Luke Konczal LB and Iowa HS prep was everywhere as he usually is and had 12 tackles at the Pioneers grit led to a close win.
Dordt A The Defenders have built one heck of an NAIA powerhouse program and as newer program kind of lurk in the shadows of the GPAC. They are a NAIA Natty contender again this fall and put up another impressive 41-13 win. Down 13-3 the Defenders just said, "Let's go" and dominated after that.
Tough Day at the Office
Dubuque and Simpson C- both played well and just could not convert on their early leads and close the games against two strong teams. Briar Cliff C- dominated the stat sheet with a close to 4-1 yardage advantage but 4 INTs killed them as they fell in OT 26-20.
Cornell C- Battled hard and you can see the progress in Coach Ritchies 2nd year but could not convert in crunch time and fell by 4 to rival Grinnell.
Upper Iowa D+ Lost a heartbreaker and another 1 point game - Penalties and Special Teams gaffe. The path to the GLVC crown is still possible but very narrow.
Drake D+ Leading the 4th quarter and giving up 13 to lose going away to Butler was tough at home. UNI losses 21-17 to Southern Illinois.
Graceland fell 47-17, Buena Vista, Mount Mercy, Waldorf and Clarke all had tough days. Loras Duhawks lost 69-48 to Nebraska Wesleyan which is along bus ride home to Dubuque.
@WartburgFB @FightingBeesFB @KohawksFootball @WPU_Football @GVVikingFB @Grinnell_FB @DordtFB @MsideFootball @CentralDutchFB
One of iowa best running backs. Dekalb would be a great place to play
After a great talk with @robharley34 and @tyboles3 I am blessed to receive an offer from northern Illinois university!!
@mooremt09 @CityHighFB
5th win for Luther this year. With a great shot at winning the last two regular season games. What a great year in Decorah. @LutherFootball @CoachTroche56 @JordanCole43 @blenny10
Coe down to Simpson by 17. Wartburg down by 12 to Dubuque both on the road today. Was today a changing of the guard in the A-R-C?
We thought maybe but a ferocious comeback by both the Knights and Kohawks set the A-R-C back to its natural state this weekend. @WartburgFB @KohawksFootball @JordanCole43 @blenny10 @WJReyerson @mschrocka
The bees are putting together a very impressive season in the heart of america conference this year. @TheHeartConf
UNDEFEATED IN THE CONFERENCE @TheHeartConf 😎😎
Great win against Mount Mercy of St. Ambrose @MountMercyFB
#GoBees #BringTheSting
Nathan Behne 33 yard FG makes it 18-3 Peacocks with 9:14 left in the 3rd quarter @Upper_Iowa_FB @mschrocka @WJReyerson @AllisonBehne
Upper Iowa Peacock Update After a beautiful one handed catch from LJ Nyenow Jr, Gordon punches it in. Behne extra point makes it 15-3 Peacocks with 39 seconds to go in the half. Score is 15-3 at Half in Fayette
@WJReyerson @Upper_Iowa_FB @JordanCole43 @mschrocka @blenny10
Upper iowa update Pass to led to a Jaylen Gordon TD. Peacocks up 8-3 after a failed 2pt conversion. @Upper_Iowa_FB @WJReyerson @mschrocka
5A FB Playoff Bracketology is always a fun one to analyze when the brackets are released. The State does a great job of letting the math and process they put in place drive the pairings.
As Joe Lunardi would say CR Kennedy and DSM Roosevelt were the first two out.
CR Prairie to Sioux City East is the one long trek 4 hours - looking forward to watching to our pal @PSchiltzMSplus call that game on @midwestsportstv
Waukee NW and Iowa City Liberty both about 125 miles are two-hour treks. The other games are fairly local for all teams.
PLAYOFFS Are here the most exciting time of the year. Who do you think is coming out of each pod and taking the bus to Cedar Falls.

Quinns Brackets are out. Awesome stuff and we bet it will match closely what comes out as final Saturday am.
For the late night crowd, my final projections for the Round of 16 pods from Classes 5A to 8-Player for the #iahsfb Playoffs.

It's the last weekend of 5A IA HS Football before the Playoffs. A team we have been able to see in person often helping call the HS Football games for @midwestsportstv is Iowa City Liberty.
We are biased seeing them often doing their games but love their pace of play. The hurry up college style offense is a blast to watch at the high school level.
Last week WR passes on reverses going to for 75, amazing successful pooch kickoff for a recovery, multiple formations, 3 different passers besides the QB, throwing the ball all over Bates Field. The Lightning made the state final game last year and are poised for the playoffs again this fall. @blenny10 @ChadHarberts @PSchiltzMSplus @emerson_bern06 @adrian_clerry @PryorReiners @JordanCole43
A cool story from @ChadHarberts published today in the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier about one of the most successful Girls VB and Softball HS coaches in Iowa Shelly Sorenson from Janesville Iowa.

Big Matches tonight in the 2A Iowa Volleyball "Region of Death". Head Coach Maggie Willems Mt. Vernon talks about this region and how tough the regional semifinals and finals are.
4 really great 2A IA HS Volleyball teams square off tonight.

We are hearing that that MIAA is possibly one of the conferences participating from Michigan.
Please, please, please make that happen. Our Dream D3 Mascot matchup would be the @CentralDutchFB from Pella, Iowa vs. the @HopeCollegeFB Flying Dutchmen from Holland MI.
These two schools when you look at a county map of heritage are pretty much the highest percentage of Dutch descendants in the US.
If both teams met in the Lakefront Bowl think of the possibilities?
- Tailgating Eating Chili made using Dutch Ovens
- Teams and Fans equally sharing expenses
- Kids during the tailgate doing Double Dutch jump rope routines
- The team captains can exchange tulips at the coin toss
-Think of the Fan Experience - Wooden Shoes, All Black Outfits, funny hats...it would be more people named Van something meeting each other since the final Van Halen Concert.
It might not be this year as Hope is positioned for the NCAA DIII playoffs and Central has some work to do to move up...but if the Central Dutch from Pella do move up in the A-R-C and make it to the bowl game, we are going to HAVE to root for Alma, Kalamazoo, Calvin, or Trine to rise up and put the Flying Dutchmen out of the NCAA Playoffs and in position to go to Neenah.
We need this Dutch vs Dutch Matchup to happen. Heck America needs this game to happen.
If not this year get it scheduled as a non-con game ...Pretty please AD for Hope and Central make this game happen.

A-R-C DIII Bowl Game is Here - sportsguysiowa.com/a-r-c-dii… Our Column
At Sports Guys Iowa we have been waiting on this announcement since it was put in the A-R-C Strategic Plan a year ago. It is awesome that an Iowa College (maybe 2 or 3 😀) will get a chance to play a post season bowl game this fall.
The positives are clear -
1. The top 1-2 A-R-C teams that don't make the DIII NCAA playoffs are good D3 football teams and get to play another week.
2. That team(s) gets additional practices and extra work to get the team a head start on the 27 season and be rewarded for a strong season.
3. It's good for the A-R-C Brand and helps the conference stay competitive with the surrounding DIII bowl games that are already in place (Isthmus Bowl in Madison is a very good bowl, and the Lakefront Bowl in Milwaukee) that give 4 D3 Conferences a team playing an extra game every year.
4. Neenah and the Fox Valley in Wisconsin is a great area with plenty to do. (Some SGIers lived in Neenah so we know what a great area the Fox Valley is firsthand).
There are still open questions as in the A-R-C Release they stated "Inaugural Riverbend Bowl Series, a postseason football event that will bring together teams from NCAA Division III on Saturday, November 21, 2026 in Fox Cities region of Wisconsin."
Open Questions?
The other conferences/teams involved are TBD. Maybe not TBD, but more likely to be announced later.
In reading the tea leaves and what others are saying it looks like the MIAC is not involved. That we believed was the best partner. The A-R-C and MIAC are two top 5ish leagues in DIII. Very strong similar football - All MIAC teams are in Minnesota Minneapolis down so geographically and competitively it would have been a home run.
Neenah Wisconsin as a location means it's likely that the NACC, Midwest Conference, and maybe the WIAC or UMAC is involved in some way. The CCIW may also be involved. That mystery will be revealed officially at some later point.
2. The location and distance is a surprise as it is announced as an A-R-C Two bowl game event. That could mean up to two A-R-C teams playing nowhere near their home state. Dubuque to Neenah is the closest at 195 miles. Indianola (Simpson) to Neenah is a haul folks. Seems odd to have a bowl game announced for a conference with no partner that is no where near the first announcing conference teams. (Now that may be solved the minute we hear who else conference wise is involved). The Isthmus and Lakefront bowl locations are placed at the mid-point basically of the conferences who participate.
3. We have been in jest joking about a MIAC - ARC Bowl in Austin MN that we called the Spam Bowl, but the logic we had was it is a mid-point location between the two conferences. Why Neenah? Right now without more details we are mystified on the location choice.
4. We freely admit we wanted a location like Mediacom Stadium in Des Moines Iowa to be the host. Maybe that could happen in the future. Great Iowa Facility right in the heart of the A-R-C
We suggest going to @LogHanRatings who has some good thoughts on the location and mix of teams also to read. IMO. Again why NE Wisconsin? For many SGIers its great as we grew up there and have family we can visit when up for the game, but for most of the schools it is not close at all to their campuses.
5. Selfishly as Iowans if the MWC is involved it would be awesome to get Cornell, Grinnell, or Luther high enough in the standings to get 3rd (Luther and Grinnell both have legit shots at 3rd this year) and have them as one of the teams going to the Riverbend (the 2nd place MWC goes to the Lakefront bowl). An Iowa vs Iowa game for instate teams that don't play each other anymore (except for Coe playing Cornell every year) would be awesome.
The Positives sure outweigh the questions and "sure would have been nice" thoughts.
Today announcement was more like an impressionistic painting. Nice colors, looks good, but lacking details. It was a Monet versus a Rembrandt announcement.
We can't wait for further announcements to become official. We think this is great for Iowa DIII Football teams. @D3FBHuddle @d3football @ChadHarberts @blenny10 @JordanCole43 @DTMWartburg @mctownsley @RHS76
