The 3-guard lineup was the plan, but after one game against OKC, is it already time to adjust or do the Spurs just need Wemby to play like himself? Let's hear your thoughts.

Spurs get one more night off to figure things out before they face the Rockets who will be gunnin' for them at the Moody Center in Austin. Mitch Johnson didn’t sugarcoat the three-guard experiment after opening night. Is this the starting five the Spurs stick with, or was that a clear signal they need more size?

One game doesn’t define a season, but Wemby openly admitting he wasn’t having fun and overthinking against OKC’s physicality is the kind of early red flag Spurs fans should watch closely. The last time he shot that badly- but not worse than 1-13 (7%) was against OKC in Oct 2024. He was 1-for-5 (20.0%) from the field and 0-for-3 from deep, finishing with just 6 points in 27 minutes. As long as Mitch chooses not to play two bigs when other teams have two bigs versus Victor they will keep losing more than they win.

A brutally frustrating 116–104 opening night loss for the Silver & Black against OKC, and you don’t have to look far to see where the wheels fell off: 1. The 2nd Quarter Flatline You simply cannot spot a contender a 26-point lead in the first half. After an energetic opening frame, San Antonio mustered just 16 points in Q2. Stagnant half-court sets, settling early in the clock, and careless transition chances completely handed over game control before the break. 2. Wemby’s Nightmare Shooting Night Victor anchored the interior defense with 13 rebounds and 6 blocks, but offensively OKC threw the kitchen sink at him. He finished just 1-of-13 from the floor (0-of-4 from 3). Getting to the line (10/12 FT) saved his scoring line, but OKC’s frontcourt muscle and swarming digs completely threw off his rhythm around the rim. 3. The 3PT Chasm & Bench Swing The modern math was merciless: • OKC: 14/31 (45.2%) • SAS: 10/37 (27.0%) While Jared McCain caught absolute fire off the Thunder bench (20 PTS, 6/8 from deep, +20), the Spurs couldn't buy a consistent look from the perimeter. Champagnie struggled to find flow (-24), and Devin Vassell was limited to 7 shot attempts all night. 4. SGA Being SGA When the Spurs pushed hard in the 3rd quarter to cut the deficit to 10 behind Stephon Castle's aggressive downhill scoring (24 PTS, 5/12 3PT), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander slammed the door shut. 32 points on 13-of-27 shooting, dissecting coverages whenever OKC needed an answer. The Silver Lining: Loved Castle’s assertiveness (team-high 24 PTS) and Dylan Harper showing zero hesitation attacking downhill (18 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST). They fought back in the second half, but digging a 26-point crater while shooting 38.7% as a team is an impossible hole against OKC.

Here's why the OKC Thunder are ranked ahead of the Spurs on several Power Rankings and up big in the first half of their first game against each other. Will the Spurs respond in the second half? Wemby hasn’t made a field goal (0/7). He has eight points, all from free throws. His six rebounds and three blocks help, but the Spurs need baskets from their centerpiece. The guards and Vassell aren’t supplying enough scoring. Fox has four points, Harper four, Castle five and Vassell five. Harper is shooting 28.6%, Castle 22.2% and Vassell 25%. Fox is at 50%, but has only four attempts. SGA alone has 16 points. That’s nearly as many as Fox, Harper, Castle and Vassell combined (18). He also has four assists and two blocks. OKC is getting scoring beyond its stars. Jared McCain has 11 points in 10 minutes on 80% shooting. Caruso has eight on perfect shooting. Even with Jalen Williams shooting just 25%, the Thunder are comfortably ahead. The second quarter broke the game open. OKC won it 31–16, turning a six-point lead into 21. Your screenshots also show a 36–12 run spanning late in the first quarter into the second.

De’Aaron Fox was assessed a Flagrant Foul Penalty 1 for throwing Chet Holmgren to the ground. After review (including a Thunder coach’s challenge), the call stood. A scuffle followed, resulting in technical fouls on Victor Wembanyama plus Jaylin Williams, Jalen Williams, and Kenrich Williams (Thunder).

😱 It’s opening night, and Spurs–OKC already feels like a playoff game. Technicals flying in San Antonio, with De’Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama visibly heated. Oklahoma City has gotten under their skin. This rivalry picked up right where it left off.
