I loved your maps! I keep thinking about trying it out again for my disaster relief app if I can get my income up.
I ended up hand compiling the maps myself. All I can say is you guys have done impressive work!
"As a small customer, we just couldn't get attention" with Mapbox on bugs. "With Stadia Maps, when we reach out, we get answers."
LandSearch on why support matters.

weeklyOSM 843 is out. Best item for routing devs: why OSRM stacks up traffic light penalties at trunk junctions, and how stop-line tagging fixes it.
Also: Andy Allan on OSM moving its transport layer from raster tiles to client-side vector styles.

MapLibre GL JS v6.10.0 is out, and it is mostly a terrain release.
Markers now test occlusion with a CPU ray walk over the DEM instead of a depth-buffer readback, so a moving terrain map stops stalling the GPU once per marker.

Now available. More water detail in @stamen Terrain, smaller tile sizes at low zoom.
Smarter data consolidation and better simplification can do both at once. Four before/after comparisons including Lake Ontario.

weeklyOSM 842 is out, and we're in it twice: our forward vs reverse geocoding explainer, and our new local meet-up sponsorships.
Worth reading the whole issue.

Martin v1.15.0 bakes hillshade from Mapzen normal tiles and traces contours from Terrarium tiles as MVT. Terrain shading moves server-side; no client-side work needed. Proud founding members of @maplibre.

🗺️ MapLibre GL JS v6.8.0 is out. Terrain draping stops shimmering at high pitch (mipmaps plus trilinear filtering), and default markers now build about 2x faster.

Should your checkout form use autocomplete, structured geocoding, or search? The answer depends on your UX. Picking the wrong option can cost you in accuracy and API spend.

Whether you're thinking about leaving Mapbox over a rising bill or Google over lock-in, the pattern is the same: pick renderer-agnostic formats, and you're never stuck again. See both migration paths and more. #BuildWithStadiaMaps

Placemark is now fully open source. A MapLibre cofounder replaced Mapbox GL JS with MapLibre, so forks no longer need a Mapbox token.
Open tooling, one dependency lighter.

Using Leaflet and want vector tiles? maplibre-gl-leaflet adds vector rendering without replacing your Leaflet setup. Same API, sharper tiles.

Water label improvements are live: the Great Lakes show up at zoom 5 now instead of zoom 8, lake labels are properly centered, and straits finally appear in the water_name layer.

Running a meetup means covering venue, food, and WiFi costs yourself, then hoping a sponsor form gets approved somewhere. If you're a Stadia Maps customer organizing a GIS or location-tech meetup, we'll cover up to $200. No long submission form required.

Routing across a plaza instead of around it has been a Google Maps blind spot for years. Valhalla, the engine behind our routing API, just fixed it, built by a GSoC student with Valhalla's maintainers. Looks like we have some updates to do.
