man, the whole php2shell discourse is incredibly frustrating.
1. people claimed vendors were exaggerating the vulnerability and that it was practically hard to exploit.
2. they pointed to the unclaimed wallet in stealmybitcoin as "ground truth" supporting that argument.
3. except apparently nobody bothered to check how badly configured the challenge was in the first place.
what annoys me is how confidently people, including security professionals, jumped on the bandwagon to declare the vulnerability overhyped based on a challenge that wasn't even properly working.
like, think about whose narrative is actually more dangerous here.
the vendor saying php2shell is reliably exploitable and urging people to patch, or someone pointing to a broken challenge as "ground truth" that the vulnerability is overhyped and practically hard to exploit?
i agree it's hard to exploit without a frontier model or a highly skilled operator using capable open models. not everyone has access to either, and that could partly explain why we aren't seeing widespread exploitation.
but does that really change how we should think about patching?
you can reasonably assume well resourced threat actors have access to frontier models and talent to repro. they're not necessarily doing amateur spray and pray attacks, right? they probably have specific targets, and can afford to spend hours adapting an exploit to those environments.
i don't think you're explicitly telling people not to patch. but using an unsolved, badly configured challenge as evidence that the vulnerability is overhyped can give people false confidence and lead them to delay patching.

i'm honestly frustrated because i still don't understand what point you were trying to make with the original post.
you're saying vendors are exaggerating the risk, and that the alert fatigue they're creating will hurt when a mass-exploitable rce emerges.
but is not there more risk in the opposite direction too like the one you are trying to push ? it's precisely this noise and urgency that's making people drop everything and patch their vulnerable servers, so vendors are correct in what they doing right?
otoh, your post could leave people with the impression that php2shell isn't a serious threat and that patching can wait. isn't that narrative more harmful than the exaggeration you are criticizing?
i genuinely want to understand what takeaway you wanted people to have.

[MARIO KART WORLD DLC LEAKS] 🧵
A new exploit has been engineered for the Switch 2 OS and it's a huge win; tons of data from games have been extracted. I've found some files that indicate how the DLC for MKW will be handled, or at least what they're testing internally.

i dont think vibecoded software is really much more bug-prone than any other software. almost all complex code is buggy if you havent tested it. theres just a selection bias, where more often vibecoded projects are created by people not interested in testing and maintenance

The centrist line on trans issues has gone from “Maybe LGBT rights shouldn’t be a cornerstone” to “Trans women are men and should be denied healthcare” in like 3 years. And if you believe their views might continue to shift, you’re woke and you don’t want Democrats to win.

No, Cameron, we’re not gonna do that. You actually have to concede this one issue in fucking Iowa. Sorry.

Part of the issue w/ AI in math discourse is that most people have never read a math paper, or even taken a proofs based math class. It's a little bit like trying to argue abt the value of art and the discomfort around automation w/ ppl who've never seen a painting
