Finally get to be an Austin Second Rounder. Booked flights badge and accommodation before being financially sensible could get in the way of “well too late now - it’s booked”.

Meta tried to build a 200-megawatt data centre on farmland in Zeewolde. Twice the electricity of the entire town. 20 rebels occupied the council. "We want Greta, not Meta." They won, and then the Dutch banned hyperscale centres over 70MW. Direct action works! wagingnonviolence.org/2026/0…

From when I started commenting on the Guardian about about 16 years ago, and more recently on Twitter/X I have been trying to get across that the climate and ecological crisis is likely to impact our societies with food shortages. That this is the mechanism most likely to cause collapse. Looking at it as an ecologist, I am used to looking at what is most likely to cause a collapse or decline in a species population. The limiting factor. Often it is food, but also water, temperature minimums or maximums, competition etc. Human society is slightly different, because we buy our food, technologies are used to increase food supply. So the mechanisms are a bit different, but broadly similar. Human societies are very vulnerable to food and water shortages, which can disrupt every aspect of this society, very rapidly. Unfortunately, economists who seem to determine government policy, don't think like this and are not familiar with ecological concepts. Even in the most advanced human societies, if food shortages lead to food hyperinflation, meaning a considerable proportion of the population struggles to by able to afford food, even if only temporarily. It could cause societal chaos, riots, and lead to a total lack of trust in government. Our countries could become ungovernable. This would affect every aspect of our economy, governance and financial system, and rapidly create a crisis. It is not me saying this. Well I am and having been saying it, but so have many other experts. The frightening thing, is that the silence from the government about the current climate emergency, indicates that the UK governments, and other governments have got no strategy for dealing with this. I am really struggling to cope with this, because I am not trying to promote myself as any sort of expert on this, but I don't know of anyone else who has a better handle on the nature of this crisis. Please note, I say "better". I am not saying no one else has a handle on this. Just that it doesn't seem better, they don't seem to have thought of many of the aspects I have. It would really make me feel a lot more secure, if there were other experts I could refer you to, but I don't know of any. xitter.cf/nebriefing/status/2001…

They told you the planet is dying… and you’re the problem. Your food. Your habits. Your existence. Meanwhile, behind closed doors, something else is growing. AI data centres in the UK alone could pump out 123 million tonnes of carbon emissions — the equivalent of millions of human lives over a decade. But where’s the outrage? Instead, they blame cows… tax farmers… and squeeze the people who actually feed you. While tech giants expand quietly… signing deals… building systems that never sleep… and never get questioned. Different rules. Different targets. Same script. So let me ask you… Why are everyday people being punished… while the biggest emitters keep getting rewarded? Is this really about saving the planet… or controlling who pays the price? Drop your thoughts below — I want to hear what you think. And if this made you stop and think for even a second… share it. More people need to see this.

Coffee and green tea in the sun at the Cannes Village Innovation awaiting a talk by Megapixel. Wondering how soon these newer technologies will be affordable for Indie low budget movies and keep SFX scenes ‘in camera’ instead of relying on doing more complex FX in post.
