Kobe’s arrogance wasn’t a secret.
Shaq’s dominance made him swear he’d never split the spotlight again.
He wanted rings, but only rings he could claim as his own.
The ego was loud, messy, and exhausting in real time.
Revisionist history turned it into ‘competitive fire.
Kevin Garnett says he almost went to the Lakers instead of Celtics in 2007 but Kobe was acting real arrogant so he chose Boston
“I talked to Chauncey, and Chauncey was a real friend. We was in the summertime, we was all working out, and he was like, ‘Man, you got to move on, man. I know you don’t want to, but you’re going to look up and you’re going to have exhausted all your great years here, bro.’ That was the first time I heard that where I actually listened to it and it touched me.”
“Then I just called Kevin and said, ‘Yeah, let’s go ahead and start to find another situation. This ain’t working for me.’ So then him and Danny were friends, and they started that, and it made sense. I had played with Paul before and I had played with Ray, but not officially. Ray’s from South Carolina, so I knew him. So I liked it.”
“I liked the idea more than the other options I had. I think I had a Phoenix option. I had a Lakers option. Couldn’t get Kobe on the phone. He was acting real arrogant. So I was like, ‘You know what? I’m just going to [go with] them.’ And that’s how I ended up in Boston. It was perfect.”
“I had to holler at Antoine before I went to Boston, though. That’s when he gave me the lick on P. Like, ‘If you’re going to play with Paul, Paul cares about these things.’ He told me what worked with them and what didn’t work, and I took that to heart.”
Nothing Luka has been doing so far (3 games) is any different from what he’s always done.
Leads the league in USG%, again, which he did last year too alongside James.
This play style has won him scoring titles but being this ball dominant rarely results in post season success.
Lebron is a psycho for this.
Most of these are not end-of-the-clock, end-of-the-quarter Hail Mary shots.
He knows how demoralizing it is for the opponent, so he just casually walks into 35-footers and nails them.
His jumpshot evolution & deep range are not appreciated (either)
Kobe's 24.
Forever cemented as an unforgettable all-time great.
Iconic.
Legendary.
And his tragic passing adds another layer to retiring #24 out of respect & appreciation.
90s branding elevated the NBA to unprecedented heights, but also turned nostalgia into gospel.
The game evolved.
The players evolved.
The evidence evolved.
Yet, many fans are still defending their childhood memories against the evolution of basketball.
Emotion-driven discourse
This is what the goat debate is boiled down to
A lot of people do not want to say Bron because they have a strong connection to MJ.
This man knows who the better basketball player is, but he didnt grow up idolizing Bron. It was Mike for him.
He has slipped and said Bron is the Goat before but he will never let go of MJ.
This is the same for about 75% of the "MJ is the Goat" crowd
2009 was the perfect example of better player vs. better team.
Lebron outplayed Kobe against the same Orlando team. The difference was that the Lakers had the frontcourt to contain Dwight and Cleveland didn’t.
Kobe won the title. LeBron had the better individual playoff run.
When Nike turned Kobe and LeBron into puppets 📼 The whole campaign was built around a Lakers and Cavaliers Finals that never happened. Orlando beat Cleveland in six in the East finals and then lost to the Lakers in five, and Kobe got his first Finals MVP. We never did get Kobe and LeBron in a Finals, which still bugs me a little.
I got you, fam.
If there were a Playoff MVP award, Shaq still wins 4 to Kobe's 1.
(And Lebron wins 9)
The Kobe cult's obsession with cherry-picked highlights remains unmatched.
Highlights don't capture every possession.
Impact metrics do. And they mostly don't favor Kobe.
This wasn't a travel.
It was hopscotch performed on an NBA floor.
And the ref was watching the play without batting an eye.
Haters of the modern NBA will cherry-pick this clip forever.
Can't fathom how such an egregious violation of the rules can't be spotted in real time.
I can’t fathom why old heads keep picking fights nobody asked for.
They keep regurgitating nostalgic talking points instead of rewatching 80s & 90s games 30–40 years later, assuming the younger generation hasn’t done its homework.
That’s how legends end up getting exposed.
Kawhi vs. Tatum feels like a modern version of the Kobe/Lebron debate: aesthetics, scoring repertoire, and team success can make the comparison feel close, but peak IMPACT metrics tell a very different story.
Tatum is elite. But peak Kawhi is a 2-way MVP-level impact monster.
James has had 2360 dunks in 23 years.
Kobe barely crossed the 1000-mark in his 20-year career.
Not only has Lebron had significantly more dunks, but he's also had significantly more highlight dunks.
Kobe was an underrated dunker, but not sure why people set him up for failure.
Jordan wasn't even the most complete player on his own team? It was Pippen. Jordan's coach and teammates confirmed it.
Now we're lying to prop him up in retrospect?
It's sheer desperation at this point.
In 20 years, Jordan will be remembered as the best shooter ever. Not Steph
Kawhi had 1 LeBron-esque playoff run in 2019. Another highly impactful run in 2017 before getting injured
LeBron has 8 playoff runs in that same statistical (advanced) neighbourhood, with substantially higher peaks
Kobe's & Kawhi's cumulative playoff VORP is lower than Lebron's
Despite all the hero shots & impossible makes, Kobe rarely separated himself from the other all-time greats in IMPACT.
That’s the disconnect with Kobe: the eye test can make him look like the GOAT because nobody’s showing you the misses. The impact numbers see every possession.
Some of it is trolling, but there are OGs who keep it more real than others & acknowledge how far the modern game has moved beyond what they played. They literally played a different sport. Most can’t fully fathom the scale of it. Nostalgia can only bridge that gap for so long.
Yeah, because at their peaks, LeBron was the more impactful defensive force.
His size, strength, stamina, IQ & versatility allowed him to affect more areas of the floor than MJ ever could.
MJ was an all-time perimeter defender. Peak Lebron was an entire defensive toolkit.
KD and Curry in Golden State were probably the most evenly matched superstar duo ever.
KD performed slightly better overall during their postseason runs and deservedly took home 2 FMVPs.
Let’s be honest…anyone that says Durant was better than Curry in GSW doesn’t know basketball at all. I can’t trust anyone that claims it’s Durant in 2026 now that we better understand gravity and all data points to Curry.
1. We have coaches including CLE coach saying their defense was focused on Curry first and KD second
2. We have basketball footage experts like Daniel Li and Thinking Basketball detailing how defenses focused on Curry leading to easier scoring for KD
3. GSW was .871 win% with Curry and no KD. They were .575 win% with KD and no Curry
4. Curry in the floor without even KD and Draymond had a +12.0 net rating while any combo with KD on the floor and no Curry had at best +4.2 net rating
5. Curry 3yr RAPM much better than Durant both as teammates and when not teammates. As teammates 2017–19, Curry was +9.4 RAPM and KD was +4.9. Massive difference. Durants best 3yr RAPM of his career was only +6.7.
6. Postseason EPM 2017 and 2018, Curry was 8.9 and 6.7. Durant was 7.2 and 5.7
MJ was already dominant before the Bulls became dominant.
What changed wasn’t Jordan.
The ecosystem did.
Coaching. Pippen. Depth. Competition. Timing.
Then came 6 rings.
The lesson?
Individual dominance creates greatness. The perfect storm creates dynasties. MJ caught his.
