Hi, new followers! I’m Stephanie (she/her). I’m a History Ph.D. student with lots of overlapping subject interests. I did my M.A. thesis at NYU on the Whiskey Rebellion (maptherebellion.com) and I’m obsessed with early American material culture, especially food culture! (1/3)

The @AcadNatSci is closing September 30. Some of you may not know that I've been a volunteer since I was 12 years old. Without the Academy, I would not have the career I have today. The loss of the museum is a loss of inspiration for future generations of Philadelphia

Unpopular opinion, museums should not have to close bc lack of funding. My taxes should be going to them and not some foreign country to bomb civilians

reminder that echo chambers don't feel like echo chambers from the inside. they feel like finally finding people who get it
I haven’t been too personally affected by past recalls as I avoid healthy foods as a rule but this one hits hard.

the metropolitan museum used to give out metal buttons as tickets. you had to fold them onto your clothes. this is notable for a museum because you can’t touch objects in the museum. so your sense of touch for the museum was this: folding metal. now they give you sticker paper.
The decline of beauty in everyday life shows up in even the smallest things, like tickets, where we’ve let our obsession with efficiency win out over personality and artistic expression.
Like the ticket from the Guggenheim Museum in New York, which I've shared in the first photo. It's an iconic building that could have so easily inspired a beautiful ticket design, but they opted for the most economical option instead.
Each example of this decline isn't a big deal, but the world becomes less charming and enchanted when people stop caring about craftsmanship.
For some alternatives, scroll through the photos. The second one shows old Japanese train tickets, the third one shows an old circus ticket, and the fourth one is a World Series ticket from 2002, which felt magical when I got to hold one as an eight-year-old.
So yes, there’s definitely been a decline. And maybe we’re okay with it! But it’s worth remembering that this decline isn’t inevitable. There is another way.

Rage bait aside, read this book! It explains how a country that has just conquered the middle section of a continent went on to have territories overseas, how it governed them, and how it intentionally refused to see itself as an empire.
The University of Maryland has assigned the anti-American book “How to Hide an Empire” as the official all-school read for incoming freshmen. This is also apparently in commemoration of America 250!
This book depicts America as an expansionist, imperialist empire.
No wonder our students end up hating the country and supporting anti-American regimes.

Time to make sure that everyone in the world you care about is paying attention because things are going to get really really bad very very soon

Underrated life advice: Just be easy to work with. Show up on time. Do what you said you'd do. Bring solutions, not problems. Never create drama. Be responsive. Be emotionally consistent. Be kind. People will always want to support someone who just makes their life easier.

If things are starting to go bad in your head postpartum, the single most important thing you can do is get sleep, and not just a broken hour here and there, but full REM cycles. There is no household task you can do more important than sleeping. Ask for help so you can sleep. Go into debt for a night nurse if that's all you can do. Use the evil cry it out method if your baby is over 3 months. If you're hallucinating either visual or auditory (like hearing a voice saying hurt your kids), you HAVE to get sleep. You don't need psych drugs more than you need sleep. I cannot overstate this. Husbands, move heaven and earth to make sure you wife gets enough sleep postpartum.
