Teams in high pressure situations perform more effectively with a shared & accurate mental model
However, if we were to press a pause button & ask each person what their mental model is we would get very different personal mental models, in exactly the same situation
Here’s why

Using checklists has strangely been seen as a sign of weakness in the fire brigade.
But would you really prefer relying on memory in a high-pressure moment?
Or ensuring every critical step is covered—every single time?
Checklists aren't cheating. They're professional.
Many see pre-procedural checklists solely as a tool for checking equipment
In EMRS we monitored the heart rate of clinicians during our pre-anaesthetic checklist. 100% of clinicians experienced a fall in heart rate

emj.bmj.com/content/39/3/168. For every 72 people waiting 8-12 hours before admission there is one additional death within 30 days.
Last year 14,000 people died needlessly from 12+ hour waits in A&E 😳
That’s not like road fatalities, where modern life means sadly there’ll always be some. That’s a number that should & could be zero. Extraordinary nugget from @RCollEM in @thetimes by @cazjwheeler @Ben_Spencer
Pleased to be part of this study and publication on the value of mental rehearsal in improving performance in high pressure situations.
Great work by the team in Germany following one of our Core Cognition performance under pressure courses.

Many thanks to @StephenHearns1 for making time to share the incredible work of the Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (EMRS) and how it can support serious trauma events with the Lomond MRT. To find out more:

This looks odd but is actually great prep. All high pressure practitioners think about this. Read @StephenHearns1 about mental preparation and imagery/simulation for improving accuracy and performance in high pressure moments. Comes from A&E /pre-hospital care as well as sport
This just arrived. Packed with high performance information and references. Looks like an excellent resource.
Mental visualisation is a powerful tool for performance in high pressure situations. It is particularly useful in preparing ourselves for HALO tasks.
React more quickly, complete the task faster and have less errors.

Bryony has made an astonishing contribution to prehospital medicine, with an impact across the world. Thank you @BryonyDunne for this stellar contribution, as you move on from @LDNairamb to an exciting new venture. We’ll all miss you terribly but so proud to know you. 🤗😎🥰
A pleasure to speak to the students of @PHMMSc Masters in Pre-hospital care this morning.
We discussed memory under pressure, decision making, task execution, simulation, drilling and mental visualisation in relstion to high pressure prehospital scenes.
At #TacTrauma24 I talked about preparing for high performance in high pressure situations.
Preserve you cognitive capacity through drilling, mental visualisation and emergency actions cards.
