Appalling to see so many deaf people having to explain that MAKATON IS NOT A SIGN LANGUAGE in #SignLanguageWeek Makaton are signs adapted from BSL (in a highly problematic way) used with spoken English. It's actually English with key word signing, not a real sign language.

Today is #InternationalDayOfOlderPersons! 🌍 The prevalence of dual sensory impairment (hearing & vision loss) increases substantially with age. More research and awareness raising is needed to ensure the inclusion and participation in society of older people with #deafblindness

The interpretation is that the prevalence of deafblindness increases for age groups 60-74 and is at its peak for age group 75+. The countries where this data came from is Sudan, Indonesia, Tanzania, Mexico, Ghana, South Africa, Ireland, Vietnam, Brazil, USA and Uruguay.

Today's report from @SpeechAndLangUK finds that teachers now estimate that 1 in 5 pupils are struggling with their speech and language. More than half of teachers say they have not had enough training on how to support pupils' speech and language.
