Murder in Mintgate 27 September 2026 The market was closing when the man in green arrived at the fountain. His name was Corin. He carried messages between the merchants, knew every shortcut through Mintgate, and had never earned enough gold to make anyone jealous. That evening, he carried something worth killing for. Earlier, while collecting a parcel from the treasury, Corin had found two copies of the same ledger. One recorded payments to the town guards. The other showed where the money had actually gone. He took the second book. By sunset, someone had noticed. A figure in a purple cloak waited beside the fountain. Corin recognized the voice beneath the hood: the clerk who had promised to help him take the evidence to the mayor. “Did anyone follow you?” Corin shook his head and reached inside his coat. The clerk stepped close. To the merchants packing their stalls, it looked like two acquaintances exchanging a secret. Then Corin fell. A guard in red armour rushed across the square, sword drawn. A vendor screamed. People crowded the fountain, searching for someone running away. The killer stayed exactly where they were. “He collapsed,” the hooded clerk told the guard. “I tried to catch him.” The ledger disappeared beneath the purple cloak. By morning, the official notice described a robbery. Citizens were advised to travel together after dark. But Corin had spent years delivering messages. He knew better than to carry the only copy of anything important. At the bakery, beneath a sack of flour, a second parcel waited to be collected. On its wrapping, in Corin’s hurried handwriting, were four words: Give this to everyone.
