1,600-Year-Old Mysterious Colour-Changing Roman Glass was Replicated by Nanotechnology
A technician at the University of Sheffield has successfully reproduced the dichroic glass effect found in the ancient Lycurgus Cup, a 4th-century AD artifact that shifts between jade green and ruby red depending on light positioning.
Dr Lisa Hollands achieved this breakthrough after extensive research with Professor Caroline Jackson, determining that incorporating precise amounts of gold and silver nanoparticles into the glass recipe was the key to the Roman mystery.
The successful recreation allows for a consistent, repeatable method for producing this rare optical phenomenon, which had previously confounded experts and glassmakers for centuries.
Following the scientific replication, glass artist Elliot Walker was commissioned to create a contemporary sculpture using the new material, blending the myth of Lycurgus with classic artistic forms.
This new artwork is scheduled to debut at the University of Sheffieldβs Festival of the Mind in November 2026 before finding a permanent home at the Universityβs Turner Museum of Glass.
Beyond its decorative use, the research provides valuable insights into nanoparticle behaviour that will support advancements in photonic materials and the management of radioactive waste.

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admirationΒ for him and his work.
My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

The monetary world right now:
East: how do we get metals/commodities to be treated more like cash so we can leverage them
West: how do we prevent them from doing that or at least slow them down until we get more.
