❤️ Two losses. A search for answers. And hope for the future.
October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, a time to honor the babies gone too soon, recognize the grief families carry, and raise awareness about the many factors that can contribute to pregnancy loss.
For Brent Harris and his wife, Elizabeth, that journey is deeply personal.
After welcoming their first son, Forrest, the couple experienced two consecutive miscarriages. Like so many families navigating pregnancy loss, they were left grieving and searching for answers.
Initial bloodwork raised concerns about antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), an autoimmune disorder associated with an increased risk of blood clots and pregnancy complications, including miscarriage and stillbirth. While follow-up testing was inconclusive, the experience introduced them to a connection they hadn't previously considered: certain conditions that increase blood clot risk can also affect pregnancy.
🩸 While pregnancy loss can have many causes, some underlying conditions, including APS, may contribute to recurrent miscarriages. Understanding potential risk factors and discussing appropriate evaluation with a healthcare professional can be an important step for families seeking answers.
Throughout this difficult journey, Brent found an outlet for his grief in running. His research into APS eventually led him to the National Blood Clot Alliance, and on November 1, he'll run the TCS New York City Marathon with Team Stop the Clot® in honor of his wife, helping turn his family's experience into an opportunity to raise awareness and help others.
❤️ Today, the Harris family is looking toward the future with cautious hope. They're expecting another baby boy, Graham, in January, and 4-year-old Forrest is excited to become a big brother. 🩵
But their story isn't just about hope after loss.
"Miscarriage is often not spoken about and somewhat dismissed to the point some do feel alone," Brent shared.
By sharing their experience, Brent and Elizabeth hope to encourage more open conversations about pregnancy loss, the importance of understanding potential underlying causes, and the support families deserve along the way.
This Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month help spread awareness. Share this story to encourage conversations about pregnancy loss, potential underlying health conditions, and the importance of supporting families through grief and uncertainty.

🏈 A blood clot has sidelined Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. But what does it mean when a blood clot is described as "superficial"?
The word superficial might sound reassuring. But when it comes to blood clots, it doesn't necessarily mean harmless.
🩸 In a new article for the National Blood Clot Alliance, Dr. Jordan Schaefer, hematologist at University of Michigan Health and incoming Co-Chair of NBCA's Council of Emerging Researchers in Thrombosis, explains what everyone should know about superficial vein thrombosis (SVT), the type of blood clot reportedly affecting Hurts.
"Superficial describes where a clot is located—not how seriously it should be taken."
Why can these clots be more serious than they sound? What role can injuries play? And when is treatment necessary?
Dr. Schaefer breaks down the risks, warning signs, and important considerations for athletes and non-athletes alike.

🏈🩸 BREAKING NEWS: Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has reportedly been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers due to a blood clot.
Blood clots can affect anyone — including professional athletes performing at the highest level of their sport.
❤️ At the National Blood Clot Alliance, we know that a blood clot diagnosis can bring uncertainty, even for people who are otherwise young, healthy, and physically active.
Stories like this are an important reminder that blood clots do not discriminate. Recognizing symptoms, seeking prompt medical attention, and following an appropriate treatment plan can save lives.
We wish Jalen Hurts a safe and healthy recovery and hope his story encourages more conversations about blood clot awareness. ❤️
